Make Object Selectable/Unselectable

Ok in Studio, there is this feature. I can't seem to find it in Carrara. Is it possible to hide objects from selection?

    Naturally!
If it's a simple selection, you use “Ctrl " + click on the name of the object (if your object is selectionned in the middle of a selected series).
If you want to say that it must be invisible, there is a box to uncheck it at the top in the tab of right side.

I think I wasn't clear enough :-) What I meant is that in dAZ Studio, in the viewport, by default you can select everything with the mouse. Then in the scene pane, there's this checkbox that makes an object selectabe/unselectable for the mouse in the viewport. That's what I haven't found in Carrara, because I want to be able to select objects behind a transparent pane so the pane should'nt be selectable. :-/

If you make a right click on this object, you will then have a list of the objects which are at this precise place, you select that which interests you…

    DUDU,

Ok, I'll try your suggestion this evening. But as I gather from your post, making an object selectable/unselectable doesn't exist in Carrara. Material for the Carrara Feature Request thread :-D

    HI Zig Zag :)

There's a different way to make things unselectable in the Assembly room , you make them invisible by using the check-box option.

There are many things which are different in Carrara, from Daz Studio,. but it's not that Carrara can't do the same thing,. it's just a different option, or, a different method to get to the same goal.

Perhaps if you tell us why you're having problems selecting things, and want to make things unselectable, we can help more.

Carrara has a Right click menu, ..for selecting specific objects.
When your mouse cursor is over an object, or figure group, with multiple possible objects to select,. you can right click, and select the object you want to work with,. from the Menu.

    Hope it helps :)

    Yes, it is true…
That could be useful when we have a series of objects duplicated with the same name (grass, trees…).
But when a scene is prepared, we use generally the “Director' s camera”, which enables us to select the objects more easily.
For example, you select the name in the list on the right side, you go in the “view” tab and you click on "View selection" and sometime with “reset 2D Pan”.
If, for another example, you have a cube inside a sphere, the right click will enable you to select either the sphere or the cube.
Attention, if your object belongs to a group and that if this one is not deployed in the column of right side, you have the option only to select the group.
Once you have used it several times, you won't be able to do without it, it's a very nice option in Carrara !

You can also make the obj part of a group, then make the subsets of the group unselectable

Obj being something in the instances list - with restrictions ;)

Lots of useful info here, thanks. :-)

The scene I have is that I have Michael 6 acting as a swimmer, and a plane acting as the water surface.

I'm looking from above the water surface, Michael is below it. I have an IK chain setup on the legs. Now when the plane/water surface is selected, I can't directly select the IK target helper through the water surface.

However I can select a leg bone through the water surface. Michael's skeleton is then selected and I can then select the target helper through the water surface. It's a little bit odd, but I guess it is like it is...

But with the tips given in this thread I think I can live with this odd bevaviour... :smirk:

    Hi Zig Zag,
If you have really a difficult situation like your example, you make invisible your water surface while you work on the animation/pose.;-)

Right. This is what I would do in this situation.
Set up the water so thatit renders how you like it to look, then in the Assembly Room, select the water plane and deselect the "Show in 3D View" box. This will basically remove it from selection and visibility from working mode, but even during test renders, it will show.

The problem is, I need to have the water surface visible, as it serves as a reference to properly position the body (I'm working on realistic swimming animations) and uses several view panes at once. But I will simply get in the habit of selecting the actor's skeleton before the target helper when working on a top view of the swimmer...

    Hi Zig Zag :)

When you're working with intersecting objects, it's almost essential to switch your view to "Quad" view,.. or at least split your view, so that you can see from the top and your camera , or Directors camera view

Having multiple view's of your scene,. allows you to select and work on an object in any views.

    Hope it helps

Also, as mentioned earlier, you may just need to right-click to select. This will bring up a list of what is near your click-point.

Personally, I have taken up the habit of selecting from the hierarchy. I almost never select by clicking on the object from within the scene.

But if the water is a 'plane', and you enjoy selecting by 'clicking', just set the plane at it's default height of 0 and work your animation against that. This way, you may still make it non-visible/selectable in working view as explained by deselecting 'Show in 3D View', and simply use the grid in Carrara to visualize where the water plane is. I constantly use that grid as an animation aid in Carrara.

Sorry if I'm missing the point.

    3DAge, Dartanbeck,

Well seems I still have a lot to learn from the Carrara "masters" ;-)

    Thanks!
