I got my new computer today!

It's the HP Envy with 32GB RAM, etc. I'm too excited to type more of the specs right now. This thing is quiet and fast. I will likely have a multitude of questions about iRay, etc. I've only used 3Delight till today!

You bought a new computer with Turing GPU just as Ampere is being released?

Enjoy bother. I know the feeling when I popped in my 2080TI and upgraded to 64G of system ram. Most of my renders are purty quick. I do still run into the odd snail speed, I think its more having to do with perhaps adjustments and different set of lights.

    congrats

  • My Dad bought me the computer as a gift. I really wanted the ability to handle DAZ Studio renders respectably. Yes, there will always be someting bigger and more powerful. I still need to install some applications, and juggle some things around so I can get DAZ Studio setup the way I want.

Then I'll be able to churn out more pitiful images with better resolution than ever!

  • Congrats!

Step 1: Uninstall the bloatware... there's probably some guides around the internet about that.  Sure, CPUs have more cycles to go around these days, but no sense burning CPU cycles on stuff you'll never use...

That is a tremendous gift. Have fun. A bit more speed does wonders, as well as a good amount of ram. I think you said an nvidia 1660 before. That should be great for most iray renders. I was using just cpu rendering with iray and it was bearable. The 1660 should be great. Enjoy Ron.

    Congrats on the new computer.

Don't stay up all night fiddling with configuration settings. You're never done configuring Windows.laugh

  • Thanks, friends. Yes it's the nVidia 1660 Super. Here's the ad page. It's sold out. I've spent the better part of the day installing software, and DAZ Studio content, etc. I still need to install stuff like my Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop), Microsoft Office, Powerdesk utilities etc.

Then it is probably too late for me to say, I think you should install everything through the DAZ Install Manager. Or at least don't install anything through DAZ Connect. And if you have McAfee or Norton anything, I suggest you immediately uninstall it and use Windows Security alone.

Oh no, I forgot, he's coming from Mac-land. Ron, we need to talk about virus protection. Go get something to write on, and maybe put a pot of coffee on. *Sigh*, where to start...frown

Lol, maybe it's not that bad, but you kind of stepped in something you can't scrape off.

  • It's just very simple. Uninstall anything except Windows Security. There were days in the past when that wasn't true but now all that other stuff is just bloat ware and with out expert set up it is just as likely to interfere as it is to help. HP likely has 20 odd pieces of bloat ware on the box. Killing all of it is a good idea but some if it will be tricky to get rid of and has scary names and some of it will put up very scary warnings if you try to uninstall.

Hi everyone, for your info, I spent decades working in the DOS & Windows world. I even built PCs.I went from DOS to OS2 Warp. Then I went to Windows 95., and onward. I bought my first Mac in 2007, and stuck with Macs till mine died recently. This new PC came with some flavor of Norton for free. I'll let that go for awhile.

I skimmed through the Start menu, but didn't see any bloatware offhand. It's the same way on my HP notebook.

Oh, back around 2000-2001 I worked as a Technical Support Engineer for the Microsoft Network internet service. This was back when dialup modems were prevalent. So let's say I'm maybe a bit out of touch. I gladly welcome any suggestions. I might have lots of silly questions.

Here's my very first iRay Render. It was done in seconds!

  • There's definitely bloatware.

You got some kind of AV software besides Windows security. You got a whole bunch of HP branded stuff. You probably got a bunch of "trial" software.

  • You sound like a kid in the candy store ATM Ron!  Happy rendering!

Oh yes, I am. I'm easily cranking out several complicated scenes and characters. I'm uploading them to Facebook. My friends are probably tired of them by now. I didn't want to overwhelm the forums here at DAZ. I'm greatly amazed that I could get this much power and joy for $1,000.!

grats on your new PC, 32G ram certainly helps little bit(I just upgraded from 16 to 32 recently) but I think the decisive factor is video card, the rendering speed and capicity didn't increase with my ram & SSD(I/O) upgrade, with iRay preview turned on and if I rotate the camera, it takes a while to gather the rays for my puny 2060.  that's why I plan to get a 3090

  • I've been loading and rendering stuff since earlier this morning. So far, my new computer loads and renders everything I throw at it. The longest renders take a few minutes. I'm too lazy to get a stopwatch!

  • Congrats!!!! that first render looks great!!

Here's my tutorial, step by step, to explore Tone Mapping, etc. that I did a few years ago. It's very specific and takes it nice and slow. Perhaps you can use it if you want to explore the different settings and what they do.   Your first Iray render looks quite nice for the first go at Iray though! :)  Congrats!

  • Summerhorse, thanks for the compliment. Novica, I bookmarked your tutorial. It might take awhile for me to get to it. I still have the render bug right now... Just rendering like something silly.

This computer has exceeded all my expectations. I can load and render everything in my content collection. The original size of this image took about 1.5 hours to render. That is the longest render so far.

  • No knock on the render but that looks like a 3Delight scene that you rendered in iRay. Once you're building scenes in iRay you'll really see a big difference.
