This has come up a few times recently.

The DAZ catalogue contains a few items that are apparently used for testing, or for other special purposes. For example, there was one female character who was apparently there to be handed out to members as a birthday or anniversary present. To prevent anyone simply buying the character, her price was set ridiculously high, which led to a few more "Whut?" moments when people stumbled over her.

Spuggles used to be a real product, or rather a freebie. He was a goofy-looking sort of anime dinosaur/dragon critter, who was apparently designed as 'companion' for some early iteration of Hiro. He's no longer available, but he occasionally crops up in images (such as this one). He's become something of an inside joke at DAZ and among long-standing DAZ customers (just like the Millennium Cow and the Unflateable Pony, two other characters that crop up from time to time, often around April 1st).

Hence his use in this fake product which, as the name says, is 'Test Content'. I don't think the Spuggles Special Edition actually exists. Still, if you wanted to pay DAZ $7000, I'm sure they'd find a way to give you something for your money. And considering the original price, you'd definitely be getting a bargain. Maybe you should grab it now before the price goes back up.

Original Freebie (left) vs Special Edition (right)

    image

The Special Edition has Pose Controls attached at the base level where the Original morphs attached on the head.

But on the whole, they seem to have the same capabilites to steal your heart.

Yay, it's free ... though it hilariously messes up the Daz Deals plugin 'full price value' total - I now own over a million dollars worth of Daz products, lol laugh

Swell, DAZ just HAD to eliminate the original Poser files, didn't they?

  • memcneil70memcneil70 Posts: 4,317

Bought in the freebies today and added a thumbnail to the file, in the cloud/meta file structure. I am attaching my .jpg if you need one, it is 114 x 148.

I just got rid of all my blank grey thumbnails this past weekend.

In this case ... it is not really meant as a product, Spuggles shows up and vanishes ... sometimes you can buy it, sometimes you can't. Sometimes it shows full price, sometimes reduced and sometimes free ...

For some people it crashes DazStudio, for others it doesn't ...

I don't think it is really meant to be downloaded.

Just sometimes you get the chance.

Maybe they are testing, if people are looking at the product pages in product library, although... "File with such name does not exist."

Why does it have this option in product library?

Yeah, I'm sorta thinking it wasn't meant to be downloaded either...

I did download it, but now there is gaping hole in the fabric of timespace where my computer was... it looks awful... the desk is cleaner, but the whirling vortices of transdimensional plasma are super distracting.
I tried to throw a sheet over it so it wouldn't be so noticeable, but it was sucked in... plus it's making the room drafty... oh, and the escaping demons too.
This hardly has ever happened with other freebies.

  • Man, I have been saving up for Spuggles for so long (literally years!) and now he's Free?!?!

    YES!

    MINE ALL MINE!

  • I found my backup of the original freebie the other day (in the comparison above.) I wondered why I have 200+ barely labeled disks.

  • Best deal evah

  • Yay, scored a million dollar item! laugh

Well, they're just not supporting the Poser files anymore. If you had the original .obj & .cr2, this won't have "gotten rid" of them, like the "upgrade" I once did from WordPerfect5.2 to WP6.0--

(I had a copy of WP5 in a second folder, aimed the WP6 install to the main folder, but the [wretched] installer GOT BOTH THEM! angry)

If you work a little, you can recreate the .obj by porting over to Blender and converting there. Not sure how to rebuild the .cr2, though.

It appears the exploit was in the same place many of the current store software exploits were. There is some system in the current store software that allows admins to download and update code directly in the current store software from a remote system. A long time ago (over five years, at lest), that system was ripped out because it was a giant security hole waiting to happen. Judging by the amount of security patches I had to manually tweak because they were trying to fix files that we had long removed, I would say our assessment was correct.

As we get ever closer on the upgraded store software we are keeping a close eye on any security developments in the current store software as they come up.
