I went from V4 & Poser to Genesis 8 & Daz Studio, tell me what happened in between, please

I feel like I have been on another planet from V4 time to Genesis 8 time. I mostly played with Lady Littlefox characters...Kiki, Kit, etc. and Kids 4.
I did purchase all Genesis versions of products and told myself I would learn Daz Studio someday. I didn't start until approx 1 1/2 years ago.
What I want to know is, what was going on while I was in LaLa land? From Genesis 1 though present do you remember the most? I have tried to read as many posts as possible to try to get a feel for what you guys were doing.
I now use both Poser and Daz Studio and love each for different reasons.
I just thought this would be a fun conversation!!
Oh, I really can use Daz Studio AND Poser. Please look at a couple of my works:

edit:
Genesis 1 was very experimental with one base for both male/female so you could blend any shape into anoter, also monsters etc.
Genesis 2 went back to different male and female bases. Also Genesis 2 had highest "base" polycount out of all Genesis figures as far as i know, which is why some still use it. Subjectively, both G1 and G2 eras were a bit short-lived, especially G2. I mean, amount of products created for them.
Genesis 3, when they decided to have it less about polycount (mind you, through subdivision it's high, but i talk of base value) and more about making figure better suited for flexible posing etc. Also iRay happened with PBR materials.
Genesis 8 is like further improved/polished Genesis 3, and up to this day is a platform for most. And currently seemingly DAZ focuses on adding other things as well, like Dforce cloth simulation, or new hair approach etc. etc.
This is very briefly how i remember things. Anyone please correct or add more.
p.s.
Also, i think, around Genesis 3 role of "main figures" changed. Base male/female figures became more like what Victoria was in days, while Victoria, Stephanie, Michael became more like "yet another character". With Genesis 8 this new way of things became even more. As many custom characters were not requiring Victoria etc., but base figure + morphs (or without).
I will redo!! Thank you!!
That is a very great explanation!! I really enjoy working with G3 and G8. I have a lot of G2 things that I want to use, as well. I am so crazy about Daz Studio!! It's just incredible. The only thing I am sad about is my most favorite Material vendor for Poser has not decided to make Shaders for Daz Studio. Her Poser materials are themed in each product she offers. I am trying to learn to re-create the Poser material products I have purchased in Daz Studio....for my use only, of course.
Well, I use since Aiko3 to Genesis 8, one generation does not replace the previous one for me.
they live happily inside my runtime and create a family.
Zilvergrafix, You work is so beautiful!! I would love some updated IRAY character textures for A3, V4, Hiro 3, M4, all of the Genesis before Iray came along!!! I have more clothes for A3 and V4 than I would EVER buy for myself!! So, I do use Auto Fit a lot!!!
Zilvergrafix, love your approach! Me personally very nostalgic and always love all those "Generations", it's like being a fan of car history or synthesizers, when u know what was released in which decades, and you try to collect them all, haha (too bad many daz oldies were already delisted when i came)
I am very grateful that I have the older stuff. I just retired, so I am organing my collections, putting them in my Poser and DS runtimes or libraries. Plus, I moved my computer to the living room from my hobby room, so I can be with hubby while I play. I am having too much fun!!
Thanks!,
for A3 or V4 clothes using iRay is better to use cloth iRay shaders, when possible, thus, replacing the original textures
Yep, I was late when Aiko2 was released, never got her in time. I have from Aiko3 to Aiko8 only
Yes, I have Gen2 too
Each generation of figures has posed better than the last, with less distortion when body parts are flexed/bent. Generation 4 characters had terrible problems with elbows, hips, and knees, and the neck and shoulders weren't much better. Genesis 8 poses quite well, with the only real problem I see being the upper arms.
Clothes fit much better now, with less poke-through. Many clothing items for Generation 4 actually work better when Autofitted to Genesis 2 figures.
Genesis 1 was not a major improvement, but mostly a marketing thing, to get people to convert to Daz Studio.
Genesis 2 was a major improvement. Some of the later Genesis 2 characters have IRAY skins, and I find those to be just as usable as Genesis 8 figures.
Genesis 3 and Genesis 8 have been, for me, marginal improvements. Almost all of the stuff from those generations is intended to be used in IRAY.
I haven't used Poser since Poser 9, so I can't make direct comparisons between Daz Studio and Poser 11. I find Daz Studio's interface to be much more user-friendly, and I much prefer to click on Smart Content icons than play pretend file clerk, searching through those faux manila folders to try and remember how every content maker liked to have their stuff installed.
Zilvergrafix Your little blond Cookie is precious!!! I love her!!
How would I find Genesis 2 Iray? I would like to have that!! I do love using V4 textures on Genesis 2!!!
I just found https://www.daz3d.com/n-g-s-anagenessis-2-revolution!! I would love to purchase when a much lower price!!
I'm one of those G1 to G8 people, if there's others. I agree that DS is easy to use, otherwise, I would've given up on it long ago.
I started with it in the second year of G1. I wanted it for drawing references. Thought it was perfect since it's all-in-one. I got really bummed out when it was quickly abandoned for G2F. It was trickier to make things backwards compatible. Since I didn't do many illustrative renders, I didn't care to "upgrade."
Skipped G3, because my laptop didn't like them. It also didn't like Iray either. I got a better laptop shortly after G8F was released. Tried both G3F and G8F. Liked G8, even though it was separated by gender. I liked G8 so much, it's the main reason I invested in PC+ and got all the "old stuff" to use for it.
I am trying to develop my own style for renders. Translating a 2D style into 3D without being able to use a modeling app and only relying on stuff others made for it is hard, especially the male characters.

If the thumbnail has Iray logo on it, the character for sure has Iray materials, the rest you have to open the product page to see if "Daz Studio Iray Material Presets" is listed in there
Ah, you forget one thing. During G1-2 days, many clothes were a bit like "glued to shape", which was sometimes not desirable (some even stayed with v4 poser dynamics due to that). But now we not only have dforce stuff, but also some PA were releasing solutions to that, if i m not mistaken, like SickleYield.
I was a caveman too, sticking with V4/M4/A4 until long after the newer generations came out. Then Daz gave away a lot of G2 base items, so I started using that. Then I got an Iray capable card, and everything changed. I mostly use G8 now. I completely skipped Genesis 1. A3 had a huge following, and some really cute characters, but the rigging on the base model was horrible at the joints. I have some converters that can convert M4/V4 textures to Iray, but there is usually a lot of fiddling required. I do have a vast collection of V4 characters where I've used the textures on G2/G8 using the alternative UV options. You can also play with the texture sets where you can use a modern Iray set as the base and swap out the diffuse and maybe bump textures manually. I only have a few G3 characters. Although G3 and G8 can use the same textures, there are enough differences that poses don't work without a converter, which is annoying.
they broke Carrara (and Poser but one could argue Smithmicro did) compatibly
Jan_Scrapper:
IRAY on Genesis 2? IRAY was introduced late in the Genesis 2 product cycle. Generally, if a product has a SKU of 21000 or higher, it might have IRAY materials.
You may want to invest in InaneGlory's https://www.daz3d.com/ig-iray-essentials-victoria-6-michael-6.
And https://www.daz3d.com/rssy-3delight-to-iray-converter. It doesn't work 100% of the time, but it usually works well
For hair, https://www.daz3d.com/backlight--hair-shaders-for-iray is wonderful.
Don't be afraid to test render 3Delight materials in IRAY. The results range from unusably bad to just fine.
I didn't mention dForce, which has been disappointing. Ideally, PAs would've used dForce to create clothes that drape over the body naturally, going a long way to solving the 'shrink-wrapped' boobs problem, among other conforming clothes problems. Instead, PAs have given us capes, dresses with absurd trains, wizard's sleeves, etc.
Excellent posts and suggestions!! I certainly appreciate that!!!
