Creating new textures

Is there any way, outside of Studio, to create new textures based on existing ones? For example, using Photoshop I've created new textures for Home Designer Suite 9, both from existing ones and from new ones. I've also modified existing textures for Poser in the same way.
If anyone has done this for anything in Studio I'd appreciate hearing back. Thanks

DS textures are much the same as Poser textures, they generally live in \Runtime\Textures even if there isn't a Poser version of the product. You can load the textures through the Surfaces pane, selecting the surface(s) you wish to modify and then clicking the square to the left of the colour picker or strength slider for the property you wish to map and selecting Browse.... Once done, File>Save as>Materials preset.

Textures are just images, so you can always create new ones in applications such as Photoshop. The trick, however, is making them seamless.

It's important to remember that models in Daz occasionally have surfaces which aren't contiguous on the texture even if they are on the model. Some even work across multiple texture images, such as skin which has different parts for torso, head and limbs for example.

It's very easy to take an existing texture as a template and redesign it to suit your own needs though. I've done it countless times.

I have a question. Where can I find the runtime folder? I can't seem to find it anywhere. I'm running a windows 8 machine.

That's the million dollar question really, and there's no real answer since it depends on your settings. Your runtime folder could be literally anywhere on the hard drive. It matters little as long as Daz Studio knows where to find it.

However, there's a little tip for opening up your folder from within DS so that you can find what you're looking for. Right-click any product in the Content Library and choose 'Browse to File Location'. This will bring up an Explorer window showing you exactly where that item is located on the hard drive.
