Help from a GIMP user, please SOLVED

I bought the Ony Tribal set (at another site) and found it contained some body textures in a PSD format. I opened one in GIMP and saw it was basically several layers with a transparency for the body torso. The bottom layer was labeled "Your Skin Here" (or something like that).

So, I opened the torso.jpg I wanted to use, but I can't figure out how to put the torso into the bottom layer of the PSD. I don't see anything locked and I tried to copy all and paste into the bottom layer of the PSD and I see an image in the layer hierarchy but it is not visible on the PSD image, even with all other layers turned off (closed the eye icon).

I hope my description of the problem makes sense enough for someone to answer---thanks for reading.

edited to correct my now glaring typo on the second word, now captured in quotes forever.

I don't use gimp, but what I tnd to do with things like this is the reverse procedure. I drag and drop the relevant layer from the PSD onto the skin. If the PSD has been made right and your two images are the same size then this should work

I use GIMP as well. I don't have Ony Tribal, so I'm making the assumption that the "your image here" layer is just there as a placemarker and doesn't have any transforms or anything else done with it that you'd need. What I would do in that situation is

    1) check the texture you want to use to make sure it has the same dimensions as the image. If not, scale the texture and save that out under a new name; this makes everything else much simpler.

    2) select the "your image here" layer. This makes sure that GIMP places things above that layer. You don't need to do anything else with it,

    3) From the folder that the texture you want to use as a base, drag and drop that texture so that it sits above the "your image here" layer. That should work, unless the "your image here" layer is actually doing something.

Apart from that, if the "your image here" layer is needed for something, I would close the PSD, reopen it, then make sure to do Select > None in the menus. I've found that Gimp tends to not react as you might expect when a layer or item is selected and it's not what you want to work on.

Apart from THAT, I think that the site where you purchased it has a section of the forum dedicated to that merchant's items, so you could ask there, and either they or someone else familiar with the item might be able to give a better answer.

Did you press Ctrl+H to anchor the pasted selection after pasting it?

Thanks vwrangler and chohole! Moving the PSD onto the JPG and then moving the layers worked after a few tries....and I did have to resize.

    Thanks for the quick responses!

That was part of my final fiddling around with it to get it to work---I'm just not very GIMP smooth, yet. My old copy of photoshop won't work on my windows 7 machine (sadly) and I don't want to pay monthly for a new photoshop version that I'll only use 6 or 8 times a year.

I don't like Adobe in general and try to avoid their products. I use GIMP for everything, including my products, and do not have any version of Photoshop installed.

How old is your Photshop. I have PS 7 working on my Win 7 machine. I installed it to my D drive, not the C drive, but then I have all my program files on D I don't install anything much except OS and AV on C.

I have Photoshop 7--but I can't get it to install. Maybe I'll try installing on a separate drive. If I recall, the error was more of an incompatibility issue, so it may work if I continue through the install. If it works for your win7 machine, maybe I can get it to work on mine.

Sorry--didn't mean to start up an app war! :-) I like GIMP--I'm just not comfortable with it, yet. I'm the kind of guy who buys 10 pairs of the same color/style of sock--just so I don't have to think about them!

No app warring, a lot of my colleagues use PhotoShop and get awesome results. :D I was just saying, you don't have to explain to me why PhotoShop doesn't work for you. App brand pedigree matters bupkis in this market, and with renders; only results matter.
