how to add a simple effect in an animation

I'm trying to add a very basic effect to a magic wand as the person holding it raises their hand up then sharply down again so that the energy cone effect only appears once the person has lowered their hand down but I don't know how to get the energy effect to suddenly 'appear' at that point. When I add it on the what would be correct part of the timeline it stays in the whole animation. Anyone point me where I'm doing things wrong? how can I make something 'appear' then dissapear in an animation please. I would had thought it would had been a simple case of adding something to the timeline at the right time then removing it out and it would show and go away when the animation replays itself. (pic is what I have open currently)

yeh sorry I don't get it. Any chance of a basic image example?

  • you are overthinking itdevil

render until the point you want to add the effect

    the producer yells cut!

film crew places effect object in scene,

    filming resumes

only in 3D in DAZ studio instead of a movie production stage

oh dear I just searched your posts and realised you might be like another long time user unaware there is another timeline besides the AniMate one

    it would explain a lot

I am busy rendering but can still show you ( my other tabs are on another monitor)

yeh its ok I was unaware of that for a time but got told about it eventually but thankyou for the consideration :) do you know how to select it so you can edit the timeline without it recording? I know it can be done but forgot what you select :(

I am rather lost as to what you are trying to do now to be honest

I thought you just wanted to add an effect prop at some point along the timeline parented to the wand

you would render from frame 0 to whatever that frame is and stop ( set that in your render range)

    add the prop

render start (the number of the next frame after you added the prop)  to your last frame

you also never edit or change stuff with your camera as the viewport view use the perspective view and render with the camera view if that is what you mean

  • This requires a little patience ... one can, at zero, load a prop and put it exactly where you want it. Zero its size.

When it is to be seen, 100% its size. Then when it is to disappear, zero its size.

Procedure requires a lot of keyframes to be made ... and scrub along starting from the beginning to keep zeroing the item until it is to be seen, putting keyframes in as you go. {make sure the right prop is selected of course}.

Ty Catherine and Wendy. Sorry I wasn't able to be clearer for you Wendy but appreciate the help. I'll try what you say Catherine but you happen to know how to pause the timeline so it isn't recording when you are playing with it?

I'm not running the timeline, just manually scrubbing back and forth over the timeline where the keys need to be set.

Tried this again except this time it was less work. So what I did was create the sphere at a point on the timeline. 100%. Then went to a point just before it and gave it 0%. Then of course D/S figured the next key should also be 0% so I reset that to 100%. Stayed put. Then give it a little bit of space before zeroing it out again. In playback if there is only 1 line of an item showing, it will not be seen as it goes too fast ;-)

One can play around quite abit in the perspective view - just be very careful not to play around when viewing through a camera. Once the items are 'ready' then go to a camera and run the timeline to see what it really does. Any zooming about when "seeing" through a camera will record and it won't be pretty. To undo any oopsies, delete the camera and get another one ;-)

  • wait, your timeline is stuck on play?

  • hehehe ... it's not stuck. I don't hit play until ready. I manually click along the top row there moving that little triangle or grab it and scrub along the timeline while setting up the actions.

    the original poster cheeky

we are not having these issues Catherine

I have utterly no idea what they mean by stuck on recording as indeed I scrub to where I wish

maybe they have an aniblock selected or something no idea

    ... okay good :-)

Once the play button is activated there is the pause button to stop motion.

Maybe the OP could provide some screenshots if questions need better answers.

  • I believe you can animate the visible in render property too, so the prop can exist from the beginning and only become visible at the required frame, it can be a bit fiddly to get it to work as intended though
