Are We Skipping Hallowe'en Again This Year?

I'm all for buying Hallowe'en candy after the holiday, because, you know, it's candy.  It's end of September, and there's not been much Hallowe'en themed stuff at Daz.  It was the same last year.  Why's Daz letting the competition eat their lunch?  Again.

The world is plenty scary enough this year. crying

  • always comes at the very last minute/day same with other days like christmas

  • I always am a bit disappointed that the store doesn't anticipate that we may want to render stuff in advance and release content for the holidays beforehand.

It seems so strange. People complain ad nauseam about craft stores beginning to stock holiday product months in advance, but that's literally why they do it -- so that people can actually make things for that holiday and have them ready by the time it rolls around, especially people who sell what they make for a living. You need to have stuff done in advance so that people can buy it to display, and most people want to display things for a few weeks.

DAZ is, essentially, a digital craft store. I'm not sure why they don't do the same. Other places have been so I've been picking stuff up there, instead. It's lost revenue for DAZ.

I'm a bit surprised they don't have pre-planned Holiday sales that they recycle every year 1 or 2 months prior to the big Holiday the sale is for with all the products explicitedly themed for that particular holiday tagged and sortable at the ready. They'd have a rolling banner added to the regular sales banners 24/7/365 for one Holiday or another though.

There would by New Years, Valentines, St Patricks, Easter, Mothers Day, Father Day, Independence Day, Labor Day (Back to School), Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas

Of course those are from a US perspective. They'd need their store software to detect the browser location and offer up different Holiday sales for the different locations their customers were from.

  • There are loads of scary stuff in the store already. Are ya'll just talking about new stuff?

Yeah, I starting buying stuff for this Halloween back in August, because the coolest stuff is always gone from the stores, even online, by the first of October and I didn't get to go to Japan for Halloween this year thanks to COVID... or, at least, that's my excuse for the 3 full sized skeletons sitting on my extra couch and anoher back-up still in the box. .(And trust me, if you want to see Halloween done seriously right, you have to go to Tokyo, where the kids trick or treat from store to store, Disneyland lets everyone, adults included, wear costumes for the full week, and the clubbing action is just surreal.)

As for DAZ, they seem to ignore any Holiday that is vaguely controversial now.

New stuff, but I think also just themed sales on existing stuff. There's quite a bit but you have to go hunting for it, DAZ doesn't just throw it all together into one sale a few weeks beforehand and say, "here are our very spoopiest products, buy them now so that you have time to get your holiday renders done."

Like, Rendo has been having its series of Hallows Eve sales throughout September, with characters, scenes, clothing, etc. going on sale for 50-60% off (depending on Prime status) during varous weeks. None of it is new content that I know of, but it lets people who may not own it already pick up stuff in September, leaving plenty of time to do Halloween renders for release in October. DAZ, meanwhile, does it right at the holiday, which is like waiting until the day after Halloween to buy candy (you're not gonna be giving that out this year), or after Christmas to buy ornaments that you won't have a use for and may have forgotten you bought when it's time to actually use them.

Just the other day I saw some post about a $300, 12-foot tall skeleton with glowing eyes and I have to admit that if it had been in stock, I would have been sorely tempted to buy one and set it up lurking in the overgrown bushes out front of my house. (Seriously, I've been trying to restore curb appeal but landscapers keep not calling back and now we're waiting on another quote, so hopefully this will be the magic time. In the meantime, a skeleton would really fit right in.)

Even if DAZ decided not to do a Halloween sale because it's too "controversial," you'd think they could at least do some overly family-friendly, super generic Autumnal Extravaganza. Have a sale on trees, shaders, environments (forests, graveyards, etc.), elemental props like rain and fog, pastries and coffee shop stuff for that all-important pumpkin spice aesthetic... I'm looking at DT's Nature's Variance shaders right now and going "ooooo" even though they're 3DL, because of how great the fall colors look!

    But, nothing.

Lots of other regions are picking up on stuff like Hallowe'en even though it's not part of their cultural traditions.  There would be no reason to region-lock anything.

National holidays are a different matter, but we would mostly just roll our eyes like we usually do.

No kidding! At least we all have masks already, LOL

It's funny I work in retail management and last week we had all out beer distributers putting up some freaking cool halloween displays and I though to myself "man they are getting started early". Then I realized what the date was DOH!

  • Some cities and counties will no doubt shut down trick-or-treaters.

For years, I have bought my candy at Costco/BJ's/Sam's Club, in full-sized candy bars in boxes.  I don't even bother to take the candy out of the boxes and put them into a bowl; nope, that would be too much work for 200 kids.  The candy just goes from the box to the trick-or-treater's bag with a minimum of touch-contact.

I will be really sad for the kids if Halloween is canceled.  And don't get me started on canceling Christmas either!  crying

  • from what I've been reading on facebook they are pretty much shutting down Halloween in a lot of places because of the virus. I'm Australian and if you don't know by now I love horror, fantasy extra so I love everything about Halloween but there are a lot of Aussies that really hate it and against either because it's "evil" or it's not Australian it's Ameican holiday rubbish blah blah constantly trying to educate them where Halloween originates from but they come back that it's Americanised and I reply so is Saint Patricks Day and you go all out on that and they come back back with don't tell me what I can and can't celebrate -yeah

Also a lot of Christmas stuff has been canceled this year, parades, concerts and various other events again because of covid fears.

I am terrified of American wannabe copycat trick and treaters from the feral families nearby

I go into silent running mode on Halloween, all my lights out no sound, hide in my bedroom on my ipad then worry a burglar will think nobody is home angry

    the trauma is real blush

  • don't know if anyone is interested but the santa suit and beard are on special been for 3 days? so don't how much longer $4 + change each while the bundle is over $20

    https://www.daz3d.com/santa-claus-suit-and-character

    https://www.daz3d.com/santa-claus-hair

and back onto Halloween content true there is  stuff in store like the Halloween pumpkins, grave yards, creatures, spooky stuff but it's the new releases that are released for Halloween and other holidays that are released at the last minute that at the time would been cooler if released earlier to make use of them for that specific time especially if you created holiday cards or something though retail stores are guilty of that too sometimes releasing putting some stuff on shelves at last minute

With retail stores, stuff hitting the shelves late is usually due to production problems or stuff getting held up in customs, not because they were lazy about getting it into the store.

Around here some stores started putting out Halloween stuff in the last two weeks of July... not full blown Halloween, but a good amount of stuff like decorations and candy... (is stale candy a trick or a treat)... But then again they put out the "Back To School" stuff two weeks before school here ended at the beginning of June... It was remote learning, but that's nearly, three weeks earlier than ever before and who the hell is going to buy school stuff in friggin' June... great use of retail shelf space.

Until last week, Target seemed to be hesitant about costumes, but they actually decided on one aisle... I guess they realized there are enough people who want Halloween Covid parties or are are going trick or Coviding... or maybe they are just hoping for a surge in bored couples playing naughty nurse and cheeky Darth Vader...?
    I dunno... it's a stupid new world.
Actually, it the same stupid world, just a different set of stupid circumstances...

The Lowes around here decided to abandon Halloween for Christmas two weeks ago (Lowes by the way is a mega hardware/DIY store for those who don't have them in their part of the planet)... They prematurely took down all their Halloween stuff and up went the twelve foot Santas and phantasmdelic LED your-home-can-now-look-gaudier-than-a-tripped-out-hippie's-acid-induced-psychedelic-nightmare light show lighting systems... (but they have apps, so it's okay, right?)... Home Depot on the other hand is sticking with the 12 foot plus skeletons and equally huge creepy clowns...

Not to hijack the thread any further, but since I mentioned it above, can anyone explain to me how the actual dystopic f_ _k we went from normal size Halloween and Christmas decorations to giant kaiju sized decorations?

WTF... frosty the snowman was maybe 5' 4" without the hat, not 12' 8"... Rudolph the red nosed reindeer was not the size of the freakin' cloverfield monster.
Home Depot has what I think is supposed to be a giant or troll skeleton that looks over 12 feet tall, maybe taller if it wasn't slightly hunched... this is not an inflatable decoration, but a solid blow molded monstrosity... Do we really need a building permit for our decorations?

It's no biggie if no one has a good explanation for this because we'll be on to some other insanity soon enough... maybe actually zombies or genetically mutated dinosaur-chickens chained up in front of people's homes... ?

Anyway... back to the original topic now...

McGyver, Halloween candy won't go stale between July and October.  Not to worry.  But y'know, out of an abundance of caution, why don't you give it away here on the forums?  You know, for test-tasting purposes, to make sure it's ABSOLUTELY safe for the kids!  angel

No... the Halloween candy is for me... I'm not even pretending anymore (well, here... my wife I still have to bamboozle)...  plus, I eat all my kids stale Halloween candy, so stale isn't on my list of no-go zones.

True about the July to October timeline, but those "fun size" Snickers and 3 Mouseketeers bars will get stale in under a year... maybe it's the new wrappers or the Mouseketeer bits aren't fresh enough to begin with... For some reason (and you shouldn't believe ANY of the rumors) nobody comes trick or treating here anymore... so I usually get to keep all the candy.
We buy it fresh from Costco or BJs every year and in a few months it tastes like chocolate used to get after two or more years...

Then again, it's not really "chocolate" as the amount of real chocolate in "chocolate" has declined over the years... maybe the brown gets stale?

True... Home Depot does have Halloween stuff, but around here this year Lowes didn't really have much stuff to begin with and two weeks ago they took all the remaining Halloween decorations and stuffed them in the aisle with the left over spring junk.

Well... I'm gonna go sample some of the new Halloween candy now... like you suggested... for safety purposes.

That's interesting...I wonder if there may be QC corners being cut for the "cut rate" candy bars?

I stopped giving out "fun size" probably about 5 years ago.  It just seemed to be counterproductive for me to be paying $10-14 for a bag of 96 to 120 "fun size" bars, and then to buy 10 or more of them because I was giving out 3 or 4 per kid.

So I switched to "full size", which is easier to limit to 1 per customer.  And it doesn't matter if there's only one, every kid knew when that li'l brick of chocolate would hit the bottom of their pillow case, that was a REAL candy bar, as evidenced by their facial expressions and "oooooo!" or "woooooah" verbalizations.  Kids aren't stupid, they all know who in the neighborhood is cheaping out with "fun size" and who's really making a true Halloween lover's effort, lol!  devil

The heaviest full size candy bars are Snickers and 3 Musketeers.  Those are your best bet in my opinion, even if they're more expensive.

Due to health concerns in our area, if the kids get the candy on Halloween then they will have to wait until Christmas to eat it. We should give the kids Christmas candy for Halloween.

On the other hand, Hershey's released a special "all Dark Chocolate" assortment (Mounds, Dark Chocolate Kit-Kats, Hershey's Special Dark Bars and York Peppermint Patties) this year and it seems to be completely sold out already.  I knew I should have bought more.  :/
