the emperor - with or without clothes ;)

i just saw the new https://www.daz3d.com/the-awful-emperor-hd-for-genesis-8-male and the figure looks very interesting. now, i don't really follow scifi series or western pop culture, and i'm quite stoopid about their heroes and stuff (like, who is dr who...). so is the emperor a totally freely inspired figure, or did it get inspired from some mainstream popular universe i dunno about? this happened to me once, i bought a figure somewhere thinking it was cute, and then people commented on my render "ah yeah it's xxx whatever", as if i was a fan or sth, while i had no clue, and ended up frustrated - when i do fan art i like to do it knowingly...

lmao.. hilarious bit.. how could i not remember this scene, i saw blade, but yeah been a while.

mhh ok then i'll consider it as just an X super bubbly molty fat guy, could work for me, as long as it's not a major antagonist in SW, ST, LOTR, dr who, or any other similar super popular flick everyone knows about... but me, lol. i'm like that, as soon as it gets trendy i tend to avoid it just because i have a contradictory mind. (yeah well excepted the hallyu and other weeb stuff i guess)

yeah the figure but on the otherhand the clothes do look oddly specific to something I don't know of either

yup, pretty much the same vibe... some french comics featured this style of gear too i think.
but i guess if i use him in a totally different setting this won't be a copypaste... now that i know.
all i remember from dune is those huge worms.
cuz i DO occasionally watch those pop flicks, even if a while later than they came out - but what i don't follow at all is the hype behind them, the hero worship, and usually i forget who the heck was or what the whole thing was about like 5min after the end credits, lol. like, movie watched, check. moving on XD

Well personally I thought of Baron Harkonnen too when I saw the character.

It's pretty clear that he's at least partly based on Baron Vladimir Harkonnen from David Lynch's 1984 film of "Dune". The Baron, as played by Kenneth McMillan, was immensely fat and had grotesque facial boils (it's suggested in the film that the Baron's condition was in some way the result of his depraved appetites). In addition to the character's skin condition and obesity, one of the wigs provided in the set slightly resembles the curly red hair of the Baron in the film.

The Awful Emperor is more extreme, but the influence is clear. Maybe he's what the Baron would have looked like if he had actually managed to take over the throne of the Padishah Emperor instead of ... ah, wait, no spoilers ...

  • I'm only familiar with the Baron from Herbert's book, but that's exactly what came to my mind as well, on looking at the sales page imagery.

Watch the original DUNE movie from the 80's,  it is different enough but inspiration and boils.
