An overly complicated question about rendering

Just curious what effects render times and what doesnt.

Obviously, the more items in a scene will slow it down.

But what about items not on scene? Such as 'turned off' by the visible icon? What about not turned off but not on camera? Does items behind a wall (even though completely not visible) but still in camera shot effect it?

I have noticed my self taking the time to remove everything thats not in shot and maybe that has been unnecessary?

Hiding with the eye removes the load of an item in rendering, having an item off camera or behind a wall doesn't.

The type of lighting and number of light sources effects rendering times.

The size of textures effects loading times, at least when you run out of VRAM because of them.

Glass, mirrors, and other shiny surfaces will also affect a render, in an indirect way. It can (just to confuse things, it doesn't always) slow down the resolution of that part of the rendered image, so the whole thing needs more time for the render to clean up. It's very much a juggling act where you can't always see what you're doing and you don't always know how many things you're juggling.
