Any idea why the clothes look plastic?

Hi,

I've just bought Kids 4 and a winter clothes pack, but no matter what I do I can't stop them looking like plastic.

I can see an option that says 'plastic, matte etc' but it doesn't help when I change it, also no matter what colour clothes I pic they are still the same as the default ones.

The funny black marks are me trying to change the colours manually :(   this is what they should look like.

Any help would be great.

Thanks for taking the time to read this.

Have you tried any of the material presets? (Can't see the picture). The base items load untextured (just a basic colour), which is quite glossy. The presets are in Poser Formats -> (library) -> Pose -> Winter Fun MAT.

  • I'd say, you're trying to render in iray using the 3delight materials.

This product doesn't contain any Iray presets, so you'll need to manually convert to iray materials, or use a preset shader set to convert it over to get rid of the issue.

    a) Select the clothing article

    b) Selection the Surfaces for all the surfaces on the selected clothing article

    c) Go to your Content Library Tab & look for the iRay (DAZ UberiRay folder) folder and the iRay Preset is the very first one. Double click it and it will convert the clothing from 3DL to iRay.

    d) Change the glossiness roughness to be higher like 0.75 or more, the glossiness reflectivity to be low at about 0.2 or less, and the gloosy weight to be about 0.2 or less.

    e) If there are bump, normal, or displacement maps in the Surfaces tab for the article of clothing selected raise the value 5 times higher than the existing value.

    f) Repeat for all old 3DL surfaces in your scene.

    g) Save scene, test render, adjust values if needed, save, & test render. Repeat until satisfied.

Those are really old products for Poser and DazStudio 3DL. They are still usable in iray you just need to apply new surface materials. You can buy any assortment of iray material shader and apply them to the clothing models and get very good results quickly.

    example  https://www.daz3d.com/basic-fabric-iray-shaders

There are literally hundreds of options.

Generally Iray is not great at cloth.

Cloth is made up of fibres, those individual fibres react to the light, and give gradients of light and shadow unique(?) to cloth, it's more like looking at a flexible flat object in Iray.

A good way of looking at it is to get some velvet - it emphaises the difference and see how the sheen varies when it's moved.

It can take time to get an approximation in Iray, and I've yet to see it done really well.

You can get a decent approximation with metallic flakes.

the Kids4 stuff might even have Poser shaders as well as the 3Delight ones

they date to D|S3 and well before iray that came in D|S4.9 I think

so the first thing you need to do is apply an iray uber shader, holding ctl you can ignore maps and keep those textures

turn down specularity, reflections, add a weave pattern normal map from another shader

Almost right, Iray was introduced in 4.8 ;)

They can give a good affect; they aren't cloth though, so aren't behaving as cloth does, they're distracting more than anything.

This is a blender tutorial, but is a good explanation of why Iray cloth doesn't work that well.

  • Many thanks to all those that replied.

I only needed a still frame of the figure with those clothes, I managed to do it from the help above.

Once again thank you for your help.
