Post Apocalyptic Zone Assistance - Solved

Hello friends, I purchased Post Apocalyptic Zone. I submit support ticket, but it's the weekend, hopefully someone can assist. Each time I load the complete scene click on Iray preview, my computer freezes up, I restart try again, same thing 6 times. So I load single props, paz block 2, paz block 3, same thing, Iray preview computer freezes up.
So, I open task manager, I load single prop paz block 2, iray preview. CPU 100% (red highlight) Memory 100% (red highlight) GPU 0, computer freezes up.
I've never had any issues with props, I use Stonemason props which are intense, but preview and renders fine. Windows 10/64, AMD 8 core, 32GB memory, Nvidia 1080, Thanks. . .

I don't know about PAZ but Stonemason is an experienced modeller who pays attention to polycount and textures. Every single polygon in a Stonemason set is there for a reason, and the others unseen polies are removed. That is efficient modelling no doubt learned on some game engine. That's why a Stonemason set loads and renders so efficiently.
Bottom line not all sets are created equal.
...I remember a few others being rather "heavy" like the Cyberpunk Subway Station the Airport Island sets, and Andrey Pestryakov's Forest. .
Meanwhile even on my old system, I can load the entire Urban Sprawl II or III set and move about them with little trouble.
Have this on the wish list as it would work great for scenes in the "Redmond or Puyallup Barrens", Chicago Containment Zone, or London's Lambeth Containment Zone (settings from the an RPG universe which some of my stories are based on).
Thanks friends, very true not all sets created equal. Stonemason props are amazing, work fabulous on my comp. Did some testing with task manager, just loaded 2 intense nature props GPU works 10%-15% in Iray preview. With Paz Zone GPU not work 0%.
PA's make some gorgeous scene/props sets, but gotta remember not all computers are created equal
Does the set have a lot of instances? If so make sure the Optimization Setting in your render settings is set to Memory.
...have you tried viewing the set in normal OpenGL shaded mode? I rarely if ever use Iray View as I have an older card to drive the displays while the Titan-X is devoted just to rendering so it pretty much dumps to the CPU almost immediately and any time I move the camera or an element in the scene, it's time to put the kettle on for tea or wash up some dishes. while waiting for the screen to refresh.
As Havos suggested try setting the Instancing Optimization setting (under Optimization in the Render Settings Tab) to Memory.
You can also uncheck the CPU box under Photoreal Devices (under the Advanced Tab within the Render Settings), leaving your GeForce 1080 box checked (if you have both boxes checked).
I don't own this scene so I can't give you further suggestions with regards to the Iray Preview causing the computer to freeze. But kyoto kid's suggestion might point to an error in the installation of the product if you still get a lock-up in OpenGL mode. Which would lead to my more drastic suggestion of re-installing the product. What method did you use to install it? I have had one experience where the manual and DIM installation versions of the same product were not the same. The manual installation caused the product to freeze Daz Studio while it tried to find a missing texture (but didn't produce an error window) while the DIM installation worked just fine.
Good luck!
...good point about the installation as how a product was installed can make a difference sometimes.
Hi friends, thanks for all replies, I will investigate further. Believe I may be having comp issues, thanks to task manager. Each time I open up DS begin to create power usage is very high. When in Iray preview power usage is very high, red zone. When I render character same thing, but DS renders fast, power usage is very high. Google Chrome is always very high watching vidoes. Interesting, just DS and web browsers high memory/power.
When I render character, no scene, no background, I notice comp memory increases drastically up to 80-90%, gpu stays low 4%,8% etc.... Believe I may have found the problem. There are like tons of applications and processes running in the background. I remember back in the day there was only like 40, I didn't count but looks like 250 just scrolling. Goodness gracious !! Time for comp clean up. Right now memory hogs are Firefox, Adobe helper, Malwarebytes, Creative cloud, Windows explorer, list goes on. I just opened up all 3 browsers, Firefox is the worst. Microsoft edge 216MB, Google Chrome 292MB, Firefox 649MB. DS is 256MB. Just opening up Firefox memory increases to 30% No more browsing while creating for me..... Thanks everyone.
Hi friends, tried all suggestions, nothing worked. What I did notice is in Iray preview memory at 97% shows 12,789 MB, no visible scene. Stonemason Fern Lake 3108MB @ 41% when scene clears. So, it's not my comp. Purchased an MSI laptop for web browsing
Once again thanks everyone.
...yeah when I'm working in Daz or any other 2D/3D programme, I shut down all other irrelevant software, particularly Chrome (which is currently taking about 1.4 GB of memory with just three tabs open) as it does eat up a lot of resources along with AV/Antimalware utilities (which I put into sleep mode, as I am not online when working so it isn't running in background). Any update process is set to send me just a notification as I download/install them manually (I'm still on W7 not W10).
Shutting down Windows Explorer is not advised and then you have no desktop to access programmes from.
I also routinely clean my drives and registry.
Curious, what is the memory load of Daz in Task Manager when you have the set loaded?
Amazing how much apps/programs use up memory. That's great you keep your system maintained. I spoke with a comp tech a few years ago, shared I enjoy art/music software, he shared to reinstall os every 6 months, overtime comps slow down drastically, from massive clutter.
Yeah, I used to do montly comp cleaning, which is smart, but got lazy over the years.
DS doesn't use much memory, believe increase was 3%-5%, until Post Apocalyptic zone, I rarely opened task manager. Never had any issues, freeze up, crashes, etc........ On the most part, I've been quite happy with the speed of iray preview/renders. Consumers are constantly having to upgrade to have fun
Thanks for feedback....
...Task Manager will show how much memory is being used when a scene is loaded. When I had my railway station scene (below) loaded in Daz, memory usage for the programme shot up to something like 9.1 GB.
Wonderful railway station scene. Prop looks intense. Never realized how useful task manager is, provides lots of info.
i bought this a few days ago but have not tried it yet. will give it a go and report back.
EDIT..i did not get any problems, other than the fact using the PAZ default camera, iray preview did not work if panned out much. I did not lock up but have 32gig ram, if that matters.
Nvidia 2070 Super GPU.
When I used perspective or a created camera, iray preview worked smooth and fast.
Hi friend, thanks for sharing. I can't get PAZ to work on my comp at all, I have 32Gig ram, have 1080 gpu, possible gpu is weak for prop scenes, once again thanks friend.
...thank you.
So, have you looked at the Task Manager prcocesses tab while the scene is loaded in Daz? I'm extremely interested in this set, however if it creates system memory issues, than I'd be reluctant to purchase it as I have older hardware.
Believe I may have solved problem..... When I load single prop police station, task manager memory jumps up from 16% - 35%, I go into surfaces tab, began removing maps from all channels cept Base color, I set metallicity value to 0, memory drops back down to 22%, so now I know what's causing my comp crash when I load the entire PAZ prop scene, memory max out at 100%
640 Textures, Specular, Bump, Normal, and Transparency Maps (8192 x 8192 to 512 x 512 )
I looked at a few massive prop scenes I purchased, none have that many maps, and largest prop size map is 4096x1034.
8k textures? WTF? 4k no problem, but 8k? Who even has an 8k monitor or graphics card these days? I bought that thing myself and I didn't even look at the texture sizes. 8k... I;m going to have to knock those down to 4k maxumum before I even touch it.
..crikey, 8K maps? No wonder. I usually stick with 2K textures as I don't even have a 4k display and my Titan-X is now three generations old (Maxwell). May have to rethink this purchase and stick with apocalyptic sets by Conflek-Gnorg and Stonemason.
Reducing the resolution doesn't help if the UV-mapping has been done without thinking...
https://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/427316/uv-map-and-material-optimizer
Anyone know how to find out if that is how it was done? because if I can't use it, I might as well get a refund on it while I still can.
I exported the model into Blender and selected the materials one by one to see what their UV maps looked like, the textures themselves also gave some clues as the areas that were not used were filled with edges of the used area bleeding out.
And that means what? I don't know anything about texturing or uvmapping.
