Are you kidding me?

Hi Folks

I have manually installed several products now, but cannot make them show up in the UI.

I matched all folders...runtime files to runtime and so on, but still nothing shows up.

Can someone please help?

Would like to add, that I've used 3d software for more than 20 years - and I'm amazed to find such a miserable file system in an otherwise exiting app.

Where are you looking for them? They won't show up in Smart Content, if that's what you're trying to do.

    Hi Gordig

    Thanks for replying...

Well, I'm kinda looking everywhere - and if I do find a character after installing manually (for G8 for example), usually stuff is missing.

Bear in mind, that I carefully "matched" all folders...during installation.

Is there a "definite way" of installing manually, or is it supposed to be this frustratrating?

    Thanks????

Here's what I do if I have to install manually (Windows):

    1. Open Zip File
    2. Select Contents (Documentation optional)
    3. Drag Contents into My Daz 3D Library

I have My Daz 3D Library pinned to Quick Access in File Explorer, so I usually just drag the stuff onto the icon.  This is with stuff from Renderosity mostly.  Nowadays, though, I use Content Wizard for almost all my installations since I want Smart Content.  For Daz stuff, I use DIM.

the folder structures are usually set up so you can just dump the whole thing into your content folder in one step, provided the purveyor of said content did their job packaging the files correctly

the folders do need to keep their structure from the topmost one down

so if the runtime one has an odd messy arrangement in the ones below that such as textures not in a dedicated folder it needs to be left that way or your duf file won't find them frustrating as that might be

Can you give an example of a file (name and extension) and its full path?

There is no "matching" all folders during installation, you just need to locate the base folder of your Content and dump the ...\Data\, ...\Runtime\, ...\People\ folders from the zip in there, the folder structure should automatically match the "standard" and if it doesn't you cannot change it without knowing what you are doing.

The only problem with the folder structure is, not having the base folder of the Content a common name that could be referred to when giving advice here.

Thanks, everyone. I was convinced, that I had to "distribute" the unzipped files into existing folders with matching names. Will try some more obviously. Thanks again...

So what you're saying is try this? (see image please)

    Thanks a lot

    >>>> update:

Ok, so now I managed to install a "straight forward" character product...just dropping the entire "content" folder into this:
    C:\Daz 3D\Applications\Data\DAZ 3D\My DAZ 3D Library

Not going as well with installing morphs for G8: I load a standard G8Female, and try to apply morphs, but this gives an error, hmm.

    Thanks again :o)

    C:\Daz 3D\Applications\Data\DAZ 3D\My DAZ 3D Library

The "Content" folder in the zip represents the base folder of your content, ie. "C:\Daz 3D\Applications\Data\DAZ 3D\My DAZ 3D Library"

Do not copy the "Content" folder itself but what is inside... The ...\Data\, ...\Runtime\, ...\People\, etc...

Thanks, but sorry - still confused...
Are you saying that I should only have one folder called Data (plus one Runtime folder and one People folder) - and in these folders I add the corresponding content from new products?
So - then I'm back to distributing the unzipped files myself?

And still: I'm so confused as to what is a "brand new" character - or morphs for built-in characters.
And where do put products that are morphs for Genesis?

    Thanks for your patience,

    Best,
    Mike

In your case, the "Content" folder inside the Zip = "C:\Daz 3D\Applications\Data\DAZ 3D\My DAZ 3D Library"

There is no "distributing" involved, just extract whatever the Zip file has under "Content" to your "...\My DAZ 3D Library" and you are done.

Thanks. So, then I presume I'm correct, that all present and future product files should merge into the same "Data" - "Runtime" - "People" folders?

And Morphs still baffle me...where do I put those?

    Thanks again,
    Mike

Yes, they need to merge. The morphs are contained within the data folder. Then once you load the character, you should be able to access the dials through either the parameters or the shaping tabs.

If I missed you saying why, I apologize, but why not use DIM to install which will make sure everything is where it should be?

@mail_0ad103af, also keep in mind that installing things manually means that you'll find/be able to access your content on the "Content Library" (windows > panes> content library to access the tab) rather than "Smart Content" (as far as I know).

For most products, you can move the structure of your products to whatever works for you, except for the data and runtime folders. Those need to stay where they are or it'll break things and you'll get errors when trying to load materials, props or what have you. However, if you want to play it safe, just dump everything into your "My Daz 3D Library" as is.

Thanks, guys - much appreciated. Now wondering if I should re-install Daz - to clear up the mess I've been making.
Will test more with your advice - have a great day/evening!

Re-installing DAZ Studio will not clean up any mess in your content folder - it will remain untouched. If it is too much of a mess to sort it out manually, you will need to delete the contents and re-populate it fresh.

  • I would use DIM. For stuff from freebies and other sites I would get a installer for content from Renderosity. >> Daz Auto Installer by PaulHairy <<
