Trying to make a black cat *solved*

I'm not really sure where to put this, hopefully this is the right place? I'm in sudden need of a black cat. I have the Hivewire Housecat, but no addons for it. Does anyone know if, if I just put a black square image in the fur texture, if that will transfer to the LAMH fur for it and make it a long haired black cat? I haven't tried, because I have a lot of trouble with making the LAMH fur an obj and getting it to render in Iray, but if it's likely to work, I'll give it a shot. I just don't want to waste a ton of time and computer crashes trying to render something that won't work.
Alternately, if anyone knows of a free or really inexpensive black texture for the HW Housecat, I'd love a link to it! The only textures I have for it are the grey stripey ones it came with, and a brownish one from Lynnes' site. I haven't tried the LAMH fur on anything but the ones it came with.

You could make a copy of one of the textures you already have ,rename it to Black ,I usually erase evrything I don't want to change and then in GIMP ,using Contrast until I get a even grey ,then flood fill that with black and save it either in the same folder as the other textures or afolder with my name on it ,so I can find it .then open DS load the HiveWire cat ,go to surfaces and pick body fur ,then change the texture to your new black texture ,and save as a material preset
I don't know the quality, but there is a set of solid colors for the Hivewire House Cat on sharecg... by a contributor named Fireflightt.
If you can't find them let me know and I'll send you the link
I believe Sayaness has a couple of free LAMH presets for the Hivewire cat over in the Hivewire store.
ok
Ok, so I'm stuck! I downloaded the freebie that arbee999 mentioned (thanks for that!), and I applied it to the HW Housecat. I then applied the free LAMH preset from Hivewire (already had it, but thank you, JOdel!) onto the cat (the long haired one). Then I selected the LAMH, and hit "To Object" in the LAMH free player. Followed the prompts. No good. No hair renders on my cat. I tried the other LAMH presets from Hivewire. Still no good. Then I tried them on the default material for the cat from Hivewire. STILL no good.
What am I doing wrong? Why won't the hair show up in my Iray render? Any help is greatly appreciated!
I had the same issue. Turns out the presets have to be for Catalyst, not just for LAMH for Iray renders to work.
I'm so confused! It works all the time on my Fox! And I don't own the Catalyser, I just do it using the fox's LAMH preset and convert to OBJ with no problem. Used it once on my HW Mule Deer too. I *think* I even did it once before using the HW cat, but maybe I was wrong and just seeing fur where I thought there was fur?
The LAMH presets in the Hivewire store are for 3DL. Sorry. I ought to have mentioned that in my post.
They can't be converted to OBJ? Maybe it's something specific about the housecat LAMH then...
Ok, just tried it in a new file. The hair DOES work in Iray when converted to obj, it's just showing up so white and thin that I couldn't see it in my scene file I was working on. So I'm going to play with the settings and see if I can make it darker and thicker.
Did you increase the hair count look in the readme it gives some help on what to increase it to.
There's always, you know, Daz' House Cat, which has a black option.
no offense to you Oso3D, you did a great job on the fur and converting it to a duf
but
underneath all that spit and polish it is still DAZ MIlennium cat
it's 9 lives were up long ago
If you own LAHM you can convert to fibermesh otherwise convert to obj.
@Faeofthe3rdDimension Used it here on the HW kitten (with Janet poses), I think I followed Sayaness advice for the settings :
I think the Mil Cat is still quite nice and like it as much, if not more than the HiveWire cat. The dForce fur Will did looks great and if you add another fur map to the DAZ HouseCat with dForce Fur for just the particular places on the cat where the fur is long on the style cat you are wanting then your problem is solved.
Thanks for all the advise! By playing around, I was able to get the fur acceptable. I didn't realize that there was a readme for the LAMH, I'll have to re-download it to get that for my next try. And as for the Mil Cat, I don't know, something just seems off about that cat base to me. No offense, I'm sure the fur is very good, but the base itself is just not for me I think.
Thank you very much, everyone!
