Need help understanding "Compatible Software" part of listings

Hi, and thanks for taking the time to read this, hope you can help out!

I am a bit paranoid about buying stuff I can't use in the new DAZ Studio, because I lost the hard disk for my copy of P6, and you can't download it anywhere.  I do not want to upgrade to P11 because I want to just stick with DAZ from now on.  So, sorry if I SOUND paranoid with my question here...

I also own a few different versions of Bryce software...that being said, when I read the Compatible Software section of the website here, it usually lists the compatible software very specifically...
It will usually say DS 4.12 if it is compatible with that software...but are there times when it does NOT specify the exact version numbers--like maybe if it is compatible with ALL DS versions?

Like with this product:  https://www.daz3d.com/winter-cottage

I own the main product, and wanted to get this one too on the sale...but I can't afford to make mistakes as I am pushing my budget buying ANY "hobby" products at this point in time-even when they are so generously priced as this!!!  So please...don't judge my frugality here.

Would this product work with the newest version of DS even though it does not specifically state that it does?  What if it were a model instead of a texture? Would that make a difference or does the fact that it says Daz Studio mean it works with ALL DS software?

Thanks again for taking the time to care about my needs here, I hope you all have a great week!

I do not have that particular product, but I can tell that it is an older one as it is simply listed as being compatible with Poser and DAZ Stusio - no versions. That means it is probably a Poser format product - simply one or more .obj files plus texture maps and material settings. If you have the original and it works for you, it is a safe bet that this will, too. Of course, as an older product the material settings will be for Firefly and 3Delight - no Iray. For the latter you would need to convert the surfaces.

It's been updated with .duf files so it should work in current versions, but that was done in 2014 so it probably has only 3Delight material presets.

  • Thanks much guys!  Very helpful information, I will also do some research from the info you gave here!

  • I would expect most regular models, textures and poses to work fine in the latest version of DS. Products that involve lighting, scripting and/or special effects could be more problematic. If you render in Iray, be prepared to do some work on converting surfaces, particularly if they involve liquids, glass or metals.

Having said all that, remember that you can get a full refund on any product that you buy, should it turn out not to be compatible (or for any other reason).

  • Thank you for taking the time to help me out here.

I think one of the places that I really need to start studying here would be Iray...I think that might clear up a lot of questions I have when I look at products.  I just need to get some time after the harvest and preserving stuff is over for the year, thank GOD I'm not going anywhere for Thanksgiving or Christmas this year!

Thanks again for your time and help!

  • If you're on a tight budget, it's good to develop your skills at using older content. They're often on sale at deeply discounted prices, and only need a new lick of cyber-paint here and there to make them good as new. As an example, check out this post from another thread where somebody's used an ancient robot product to make a very up-o-date render: https://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/comment/6072147/#Comment_6072147

Another thing to do is to check out (and maybe enter!) the monthly freebie competition in the freebies forum. The current iteration is here: https://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/440122/3d-art-freebie-challenge-october-2020-annual-monster-mash-main-thread-only . The top post has links to previous months' competitions. As well as being inspiring in themselves, each entry has links to all the free items that were used - so you can pick up a load of good, free content that way.

  • Thanks so much Chris, I'll check those out for sure.

I agree that the older models are a fantastic bargain for learning, especially since I previously purchased so many about 15 years ago when I was "into" P6 and DS.  Unfortunately, back then I couldn't render much of anything and invested a bunch of money for pretty much nothing.  Now, I have the means to use the older models, but am not updated enough to use the newer stuff yet...so it will work out great because I will be able to learn gradually using some stuff I am familiar with (at least to some degree).
