Sorta OT: Nvidia Omniverse

Came across a video talking about Nvidia Omniverse which is based on Pixar's Universal Scene Description (USD), and how they are partnering with quite a few other software companies.. One mentioned in the news blurb is that Blender are working with Nvidia to add in USD support, and does also mention that Nvidia are also working with some other as yet unamed companies.. It would be very cool if Daz are involved as by the looks of Omniverse it does look very exciting to say the least..

  • I would approve as long as it stays open source that way it can be integrated into Blender. It does look interesting.

I would approve too, if I can use anyone's graphic's card.

Integrated into Blender, or not, if I'm tied to vendor I'm not interested..

Yes hopefully with Blender being involved it might stay open source, will have to wait and see I suppose..

The Connect part of the page links to user's manuals for seven different programs: 3DS Max, Maya, Revit, Rhino, Houdini, Sketchup and UE4. No C4D (sad for me, but I could still use it with Houdini) or Blender, at least yet.

The USD specs are open and AMD has supported those specs with their Radeon Pro Renderer but as we both know the Pro Renderer needs a lot more work done on it.

Omniverse is the thing that swayed me to get a GeForce 30X0 GPU after I save for it rather than a Big Navi GPU even though the AMD GPU seems to have caught the nVidia GPUs in HW performance this product cycle.

According to what I read, USD is supposed to support unambigous exchange of PBR materials and geometries between 3rd party render engines, however no support for rigging. No rigging or animation support was disappointing. It would seem to be easier if unambiguous FBX support of PBR shader materials exchange was instead implemented but in using FBX over the past 8 years from time to time FBX doesn't even reliably support FBX.

Still I suppose to get the PBR materials exchanged between engines you use the USD format and then a script to transfer the materials to a rigged model with matching surfaces from the USD format model, if that's possible.

  • Well, they do say USD, and so Blender support for Omniverse should be as good as Blender's support for USD.
