What is DTLP7?

Perhaps over the years I'm purchased too many light sets when I don't know what one is. What is DTLP7? These things show up all over the place in the smart content tab, even when a light is not selected. I also have no idea how to apply them.

    My guess would have been Dimension Theory Light Probes, but I don't see a volume 7 in the store...

    It is actually Expansion 6. There was the first product (DTLP), then Expansion 1 (DTLP2), Expansion 2 (DTLP3), and so on...

    Exactly... Light probes i.e... specialized HDRI's that provide diffuse light to a scene and no geometry lights... you can use them as backgrounds but their main function is to light a scene.  I used CC Jack here with one of the Dimension Theory light probes to light the scene as well as a primitive with a Svena image of a fairy forest on it as the background... a litle depth of field and voila;

    Thanks for identifying them, but how do I use them. When I double click them, nothing seems to happen.

    They are HDRI maps, so you will only see them applied in Iray Preview or once you render.

    It sets your Iray Environment map. They are typically used only for lighting because the images are very low resolution, or blurred to the point of abstraction.

    Or in Filament, if you're using the current beta (and not using a Mac (which I believe BrainMuffin does, so disregard)).

    Just so I understand, you make a scene, place a primitive in it, add an iray material to the primitive, look at the environment tab and see the default HDRI, double click on the light probe and a new hdri doesn't load?

    Ah...I see it there in Render Settings. Now if it would stop making Studio crash on my Mac.

    Yes, I'm on an old iMac. If I had 100k subs on my YouTube channel I might be able to get a new one. :-)

    An hdri shouldn't make your Mac crash; I render on a Mac and they should be gentler than any other light.  Does this happen with every hdri?

    As I cannot tell where the light is aimed with the Dome, it took a few tries to get it on my subject. No background, but it does look nice.

    Studio crashes all the time for me. It was happening more often when I was cancelling the renders with the HDRI too soon. If I let it bake awhile and then cancelled, it didn't crash as often.

    I am concerned that your studio is crashing so often. Definitely, worth following up in support to find out why; I would look both at Daz Studio's log and at your Mac's Console app to see why it crashes.  As for visualizing the light from a light probe, there are tools in the store to do that such as IBL Master, there is a free tool to see the direction of the light, and as a general rule, you get the brightest light when the Light probe is rotated from 30 to 120 degrees in the Environment tab.

    Studio crashing has been a constant part of my workflow for years. I save often and restart the app. Of late, the errors tend to be around the graphics card. I'm on an old iMac with an ATI. Blender 2.9 also crashes when I use cycles, although 2.83 didn't. I've started exporting from my Mac to my Linux box using Diffeo for Blender work.

    For the image I posted using the DTLP light, the Dome Orientation X is at 45.
