Matter of oppinion Older Textures Vs Newer

Is it just me or does it seem like many of the older model textures for outfits Feel like they are more detailed and intricate? Could it just be a trick of post work on image or just the nature of how the texture are handled by the models for example say Victoria 4 & Michael 4 models vs Genesis 8.  I think there's a trade off some where between the two. While genesis 8 gets extreamly realistic they don't always feel as "real" maybe it's that "Uncanny valley" effect. While V4 & M4 items for the most part feel flat and outdated, they occationally bedazzle the eye. Maybe it's just artistic style has changed over time or perhaps due to newer editing tools? What do you guys think? I'll link some examples below:

V4 & M4

Just look up anything Genesis 8 for comparison.

Side note: In no way am I attempting to disparage anyone creators work, I'm just asking for a critique of visual presentation and detail.

Please tell me what you think.

Sincerely,

Jacob

they relied more on textures for older stuff

and much was 3Delight or Poser shaders which have the micro displacement iray does not do so well

now they often use HDmorphs to add detail instead

So it's more an issue of micro displacement VS HDmorphs?

I'm gonna have to research the terms.

do HDmorphs basically behave with sliders that add more details or texture on the actual model body over a textured creating the appearance? Not sure just asking

The older textures tend to have painted-on highlights and shadows, whereas the newer stuff doesn't. The plainer textures are supposed to be neutral so your scene's lighting provides the actual highlights and shadows. Because sometimes the lighting doesn't match what been painted on, depending on your camera's angle.

getting all your broken links to work was a fun use of time.
