Check your filtering settings. For Iray, check that the Pixel Filter Radius is set to something a little bigger than 1 pixel (default is 1.5). Pixel Filter method is always one of the available choices.

For 3DL, the default Pixel Filter Width X and Y values (Sampling) is 6, and one of the available modes is always active. Progressive Rendering gives better results, IMO.

3DL progressive mode bypasses the pixel filter so will not give better results, quite the opposite. It's meant for quick previewing, so it renders less diffuse- and specular/reflection depth than non progressive. Probably also doing something else under the hood to speed up raytracing.

Really? Huh. Has that behaviour changed? Because, I always had the Filter settings, regardless of whether Progressive was on or off (or am I imagining that?). Now, when I change it, the filter settings come and go with the progressive setting. Granted, I haven't changed it lately, but, now...

I don't know when progressive was implemented, but I do know it's working on a totally different basis than the standard Reyes renderer, it actually calls the built in raytracer. I have DS 4.7 installed on an old Macbook and with progressive I get a message that the pixelfilter is reset to Box=1. On 4.9 (which has the newest DS 3DL build updated in, I think, 2017) I don't get that message, nontheless the same thing happens. AFAIK it's hardcoded into 3DL so not much you can do about it:) Anyway, bottomline, with progressive you render certain scenarios involving a lot of raytracing much faster, but more likely to have jagged edges in high contrast areas.

Actually, I retraced my steps a bit and found that the Filter settings are present with Progressive Rendering set ON, but only on startup. Change it once, and the Filter settings visibility follows the Progressive Rendering toggle, so, if you never change it, you'll never know it. Okay, lesson for the day...
