Installing Nvidia VMaterials 1.7 in DS

edited October 2020 in The Commons

There's a great free resource for iray materials from Nvidia found at:  https://developer.nvidia.com/vmaterials  ; I can get DS to see the folders - but not the contents.  I tried following the older instructions for 1.5 version of the VMaterials - but it doesn't seem to work.  Has anyone had luck getting them installed in the current public beta version of DS?

The old instructions say:

tep 1:
Download and install "nvidia_vmaterials_v1.5.exe" from here:
https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/design-visualization/technologies/vmaterials/

It will by default install to:
C:\Users\<youraccountname>\Documents\mdl\

You need to open the "Shader Mixer" Pane.
In that pane click on Edit > MDL Directory Manager
select "Base Paths" and then "ADD" a Directory.
Select the directory above. click "Accept"

NOTE: These will NOT work if you do not add the additional mdl directory. The mdl files included in DAZStudio are diferent than these ones, These are maintained by NVidea and abide by thier standards.

Step 2:
Install the contents of this zip file into your DAZ Studio Library (version 1.5).

Thanks!

I did it successfully for MDL 1.6 last July. I have updated the DAZ portion of this, but haven't updated updated to MDL 1.7 yet. I created a two-sided shader, because the ones that were shared here several years ago no longer worked. I don't know why, but I was able to create a simple one with some MDL 1.6 pieces, and I doubt these have changed in 1.7.

Here is a link to notes I made about the installation. It's a bit complicated and clumsy, but it does work.

I don't know what you mean by "the folders show up but not the contents".

Are you talking about the mdl folder from Nvidia? That shows up when you install version 1.7 of vmaterials.

Are you talking about the daz folders? Those show up when you copy the daz folders from where they originally were in

    C:\Program Files\DAZ 3D\DAZStudio4 Public Build\shaders\iray

Are you talking about the Shader Mixer not pointing to the right place? You need to verify that by opening the shader mixer and verifying that it points to the new MDL directory you created to hold both the daz stuff and the new vmaterials.

  • To make things clear. Vmaterials are just snippets of mdl code, you can "drag and drop" mdl files to Shader Mixer, connect them to the shader root and voila. It works. Digging deeper requires at lest Notepad and some patience. :)
