Backup strategy

My runtimes have gotten really large at this point, and I back them up to an external drive. In the event that my computer crashes or I simply am upgrading to a new computer, would this strategy work:

install daz to new computer
copy runtime to new computer
set content manager to use runtimes

This may be a basic question, but I just want to be prepared in the event of a problem.

Yes, that would work. Now you will need to determine exactly how to copy a big runtime library from one computer to another. I haven't had much experience copying runtime libraries to an external drive because I usually download everything from the Daz Store.

Good luck. Maybe someone else has other tips.

You don't say if you are using Poser only, or if you have saved DAZ Studio Scenes? If you are using DAZ Studio as well as Poser, then copy the 'My DAZ 3D Library' in it's entirety (or 'My Library' if you use that) DS needs more than just the 'Runtime' folder.

I started with Poser but moved on to Daz, so the majority of my stuff default installed to poser runtime. I do have a bunch of stuff in My Daz 3D library, so I'll copy that too. Thanks!

No, you also need to backup your database, and import it on the new/restored PC.
To back up the database: From the Content Library pane's menu icon, select “Content DB Maintenance” > "export user data". This creates a support folder with the file UserData_1.dsx in whatever you have as your first mapped native DS content folder.
To restore the database from the backup: Copy the backed up file back to the same place you found it on your new system. From The Content Library pane's menu icon, select "Content DB Maintenance" > "Re-Import Metadata...". Press Accept. (You may also need to do "Consolidate file references" followed by "Scan known directories for files" eliminate duplicates that appeared in unassigned.)

In addition, some installers are a mix of content that goes in your runtime and things that are (or were manually by you) installed to wherever studio is, which you will loose and thus will have to reinstall. I know you will have to do this with pwGhost . I don't know what other products need to be reinstalled though.

If you use DIM, possibly you will need to do something there too so DIM still knows what's what, not sure.
