I don't know if the current generosity of Daz will continue indefinitely, obviously, but when you consider what you can currently get for free, you have absolutely everything you need to model, rig and render. I don't know what Hex offers in terms of 3D painting, but I believe there is some facility, and even if not you can get The Gimp for free.

Maya, ZBrush and Photoshop are wonderful tools (they're the ones I have, I know there are many others) but promise me that if I ever turn into any kind of software snob you'll come and clout me with that club of yours, you've got my address!

Yup ok. Although I do normally avoid beating up friends.

Friends don't care what software they use, so if I become a software snob don't consider me a friend!

Mind you the whole concept is somewaht akin to the debates about flying pigs, is it not.

I am more a software snob than you, even if the software I am snobbish about is currently avaliable at 100% discount.

Hmm good point, can one be a snob and a cheapskate at the same time ?

I think it is the idea of buying models instead of making and rigging your own a certain vocal group of the CGsociety CGtalk users (not all) find somehow wrong rather than the software used, even though a movie producer has a host of riggers, modellers, texture artists at their disposal yet claim all the creative glory for the final movie (not to mention voice actors, script writers etc.
yet most of those forum users, if in the CG industry, WOULD be actually working with other people's models doing just one small area of expertise, say texture artist like Chohole, compositing, weightpainting, lighting or working on the eye movement etc.
a Daz product user still has to have familiarity with all these things to get the results they want in a render.
I dare say a photographer creatively using bloodied goth Barbie dolls in diorammas would still be considered an artist, an avant gaurde one but an artist nonetheless.

Here I am. I've been around just kind of quite for me. I only helped a couple of folks yesterday and maybe one post in a fun thread.

Yesterday was one of my Hospital visit days. The rush hour drive into the city was rough on me but I'm still okay acourding to the techs. I'll find out my Dialysis status on my next monthly visit with Dr. Allon. I might need to go back to three treatments a week. I will not know untill then.

can you use an Andoid during treatment?
maybe play with Truesculpt or if you can get it to install, Blender!
you can browse the net like I do EVERYWHERE as well as post on the forum.

I'm limited to one arm during treatment, my left. I can not move my right arm, the needle arm, or I might mess up the flow and set off alarms. I have a personal TV, we all do, so I have a time killer but it gets boring anyway. I'm thinking of getting a kindle so I can read, I think I could manage that one handed. Not sure if I could surf or model with my left hand. It is something to think about.

I love my Kindle (I have one of the third-generation ones with 3G, not Kindle Fire or the smaller newer ones). It's definitely possible to use it one-handed, and you can even surf the web with it (although surfing on it is admittedly somewhat cumbersome). I've actually posted to the DAZ forums a couple of times from my Kindle.

I was thinking of just one of the basic ones, but I do have WiFi at the clinic so I might get one I could surf with. Heck I might just get a tablet with an e-reader so I can play at other stuff too. I'm also my brothers ride to his doctor, hours of wasted time, and Cecile's VA appointments which are many hours of empty time. I guess I really do have some thinking to do.

Thanks for all the info folks. I'm going to need to decide so I can get my Tech purchase for the year, I'm setting on that money until I find what I really want.

Is this a GOOD deal? I'm offered PS CS6 100% for $299. I really want Vue Full but do not wish to spend that kind of money this year. My next check will be Nice so I might wait another year for Vue.

News flash: The sky is falling.

I've been reading in the forums and found some interesting (to me, anyway) information. Jaderail likes DS4.5 and uses Chrome. What will happen next? He's going to make a Tech purchase. I hope it's not s99n. He'll probably be teasing us with tidbits before revealing his decision. But will it be compatible with Poser?

Okay! After what just happened I agree, "The Sky Is Falling!!!" I just lost a large post to the Log In Log Out Bug!!

So I'll back this one up as I go. First off AA, YES!! I really do like DS4.5Pro. I did not want to try the Beta's because I would have lost my Reality plugin. That's no longer an issue, Reality 2.5 has been updated and I will have my Reality back TODAY! Woo Hoo!! Now about Chrome, I switched to it because IE does not show all the Avatars. I love the Avatars and seeing what other users use for theirs. It tells you so much about the person, I think.

Now back to this Part. I miss that fellow also. He always brings some interesting things to the table, so to speak. I just hope he will join us again now that the forums are almost back to normal. I also wish that Barry would get back to checking in with his stuff more than he does, he also brings ideas and thoughtful stuff on his visits. Jacob seems to just peek in from time to time and then wander off again. Then Andy has his stuff and seems to only post to help others when he can. I understand we all have things to do and deal with but I miss all the fun we had when everyone went off on a NUTTY POST RUN from time to time. Such fun. I'm sure those days will come back as life allows for all of us.

    Jeff.

Geez, maybe I can get this typed before I have to log in again and again and again. I'm hitting major forum problems tonight. Was much better this morning.

I can understand about your Reality. I love using 4.5. Do have a question though. I've got duplicate entries in my Content Library. Laptop lost by CMS, so I'm trying to categorize again. What are Orphan File References and what does Remove them do?

Yeah, I miss all the fun and exchange of ideas we had before. Times change and I guess we have to change with them. I hate my cell phone and wish I could just have one that was wired into the wall with a dial, not even touchtone.

I used Chrome while this one was in the shop because Chrome is faster. I may switch back and forth from IE to Chrome now. Seems like Google and Microsoft are having a spat. IE's not handling Google well for me right now and MS isn't handling Google well. Hmmmmph!

Orphan File References are entries in the CMS database pointing to files that are not there -- for example, if they've moved. Removing them removes the references, so only the entry for the correct location shows.

BTW, 4.5 has an option under "Content Library > options menu > Content DB Maintenance > Export User Data" which writes your CMS categories and what's in them to a .dsx file in Runtime\Support. It's a plain-text file like the ones metadata for products comes in. Save those files (they'll be called User_1.dsx, User_2.dsx, etc.) and you can recreate your categories if something happens to the database.

Thanks a bunch. Removing the orphan file references is just what I wanted to do. I noticed that Export User Data the other day and wondered where I would export them to. Sounds like this feature will get a lot of use.

Geez, Barry, what do you want to buy now? Modo to go with Maya? V5, M5, and S5 aren't enough for you?

You can inherit it, earn it, win the lottery, or borrow it. Take up a collection. Sell or pawn all your possessions, including computer. Just don't do anything illegal.

Nope, money doesn't grow on trees. Or bushes. I tried a couple of money bushes and my black thumb killed both of them.

Ideally I'd like to earn it!

As for what I need it for, I kind of need it for bills and debt, not to actually buy anything this time. Got an old Android phone I'm thinking of trying to sell but in all honesty I don't think people will buy it because the camera lens looks cracked.

Ouch, sorry about the bill thing Barry. I've been off the market so long I wouldn't know how to earn or make money if my life depended on it.

Anne I see Mike fixed you up with the file reference issues. The ID issues can be fixed with updating all your older Genesis files, I had to update 8 of my sets and I'm just going to update all of them because it says 4.5 works better with them. It's mostly the shape files that cause the ID error.

I killed the dynamics of the peasant clothng using Richard Haseltine's script
fixed the duplicate errors but it is not recognized as dynamic cloth but then it was not recognized at all before so not much different, only file giving me issues, everything else works fine.
might need to redownload it for an update.

I just noticed that Miss Bad Wolf only needs 11 post to hit Addict. Then I could change my Avatar because I would not be to only Addict anymore. But she seems to have dropped her posting after the move to mom's house. I so wish she would come back.

I know you are PAM. You are really the very first Addict. But your Admin status hides that fact from all the Forumites. I got the first public Addict brand on my forehead, so to speak, above my head really. I'm with you in that they should change the title to DAZ3D Addict. Addict sounds so drug user like to me. I'll take down my Avatar when we have another public Addict. I'm not found of the idea that others might not connect the Avatar with the title. You see what I'm getting at?

Yes I do know what you mean. We groande when we saw what the title was.

Had a friend who was siabetic. when we were out doing shows with our re-enactment society he alwasy asked someone to go with him when he had to inject himself, because there were alwasy kids around and he didn't want to be caught doing it in case they thought he was some sort of addict.
