I've always wondered: why does Daz3d use so much VRAM even in an empty scene?

If you were to create a new scene, leave it completely, 100% blank, and then hit the render button, you could see VRAM usage as high as 3gb. Why is this? I always wondered why there's such a high VRAM use before we even get into loading characters and environment.

I assume that even just the light from a camera headlamp needs to be caculated.

    That's not DS, that's Iray.

just a guess I think that's just the minimum space it needs to start calculation, or maybe which is reserved for or by other things from your OS to programs.. Like Sevrin mentions, Daz Studio sents all content to Iray and all assets arrive at the videocard to be rendered there.

  • Is the GPU an older, pre-RTX model? For those Iray sends a lot of code across, to make up for the features thata re not built-in, and that will happen regardless of the scene's content.
