Answered and it's "no" (Fixes for loading old Genesis .DAZ scene files with Memory Access errors?)

I found the below thread from 2017, but it doesn't offer any solutions so I was hoping someone had figured something out. These are the first DAZ scenes I ever put together, so have nostalia value and I really like them, but wouldn't mind bringing them up to my current skills.

https://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/198461/loading-old-daz-files-crashes-mac-hard-and-gives-error-opening-file-on-windows/p1

The scenes were made in 2012 so whatever Daz3D version was running then doesn't seem compatible with the current version. I'm hoping there's a patch or trick to loading them so I can convert them to modern files.

.Here's a sample of the errors in my log file:

2020-10-24 09:26:34.599 Opening file Kylara.daz...2020-10-24 09:26:36.118 Error setting pointers while reading file [local filepath]Kylara.daz : C Exception: Memory Access Violation - Attempted to read memory at address 0x000000002020-10-24 09:26:36.118 File read time: 0 min 1.4 sec.2020-10-24 09:26:36.128 Building Scene...2020-10-24 09:26:36.399 WARNING: Object::disconnect: No such signal QObject::currentValueChanged()2020-10-24 09:26:36.399 WARNING: Object::disconnect: (sender name: 'CTRLlHandStraighten')2020-10-24 09:26:36.400 WARNING: Object::disconnect: No such signal QObject::currentValueChanged()2020-10-24 09:26:36.404 WARNING: Object::disconnect: (sender name: 'CTRLlHandSpread')

I added all the runtime directories and all associated with it, though I may have missed something, I suppose.

The files are all local as well.

Here's one of the scenes if you're curious. The second doesn't have any renders I can find, leaving me curious.

  • The short answer is, you're borked.

As the other thread points out, it's a program level issue, and is basically uncorrectable.

The scene file has information that doesn't exist anymore or has changed drastically since the DS version it was saved in.

About the only way i've found to over come this is to install an older version of DS, preferably pre 4.5, load the scene and save out as subsets and presets, while making notes of assets used, and positions for possible rebuild.

Something else to be aware of is that assets have had some major changes as well, restructuring of data libraries, updates to various aspects of the genesis series etc, so you may also need to reinstall the older versions of assets to get it to load.

Basically, it's going to be easier to try to rebuild/update the scene from scratch than try to recover the old one.

LOL! Love your straight-shooting. I just wish it did the "locate missing files" equivalent so you could update rather than create from scratch. But the good news is I found the product files (some of the pieces were in the Genesis starter kit) so I can recreate. Not going to install an ancient copy. Too much potential for harm.

    Thanks.

  • If I recall correctly Daz Studio 4 will not read or load any .daz files from versions before Daz Studio 3, I'm not sure if this is the issue you are having or not, but if it is a fix would be if you still have a Daz Studio 3 installer. Install Daz Studio 3, then save all .daz scene files in Daz Studio 3. Then they should be able to be opened in Daz Studio 4, you could then save the .daz files as .duf if you want.

Thanks. I already decided installing an ancient copy would likely cause more trouble than it's worth, but maybe your suggestion will help the next person who didn't think to upgrade old file formats. I've opened these files since creation, but didn't think to change how they were saved.
