Why does sun-sky produce more lifelike renders than HDRI skies?

I started using Daz Studio as a total newbie to 3D modeling 10 months ago. As part of my initial slew of products I bought several highly recommended HDRI skies. While my renders have improved dramatically in terms of realism, they never approached the quality that I see posted here...until now. I just learned how to use the canned sun-sky only in Daz Studio and am stunned at how much more lifelike it makes my renders. Of course the sky doesn't look as good but the characters look twice as realistic. I am totally baffled why. (And yes, I experimented with all those HDRI settings over the past ten months.) Anyone know why this is?

You should try adding a camera and in the Camera tab choose Headlamp to OFF. That will get you both better quality of both
                      the Actor and the sky!

The Headlamp can be turned off globally in Render Settings.
