Where is 4.14 installed?

Hi,

Just installed the update.  UH, there are no files in the Program Files> DAZ 3D > DAZStudio4  So using my shortcut in my app launcher no longer functions.  I was able to invoke DS 4.14 through DAZ Central.  Not ideal considering I don't use it that often.  I know I can pin it to my taskbar in Windows.  What I want to know is the path where this new version of DS is installed too so I can get my app launcher path updated and

WHY would DAZ change the path?  That makes ZERO sense to me!

I installed via DIM and it created a shortcut on my desktop like usual.

Presumably because that is how DIM is set up on your computer.

Never did that before though.  DIM has always installed to my C drive for program files, it's directed to install to my D drive for Content!

Last DIM update must have messed up things.  I just got it fixed to the correct path.  Uninstalling now to correct the bad behavior

I just installed it with a faster internet connection after several unsuccessful try with another slow connection. Now it installed C: Program Files. Did you changed DIM dropdown location option at the time of installation?

  • BTW it works fine installed to a secondary drive

my Win7 has it on E drive because C is a tiny SSD

No, I never changed that path so not sure what happened.

I did run fine from the D drive but that drive is not where I want the program to sit.  I'm a traditionalist when it comes to paths and C is where Program files go and D is where Content files goes.  It's all done now.  Works fine and as it should!

Just looked over Filament.  UH, that node adds a [great many] extras to Surface.  YIKES.  Too complicated for my brain!  OH well!  LOL

Consider this, if by chance 4.14 did not work well, you have your original install in place so you can go back. Otherwise, unless you backed up your previous version, you can never go back as Daz will not supply you with a previous versions even if you have problems and beg them. There is a small chance you might get it, but I have seen numerous posts in various forums that say Daz straight up refused to offer the previous download. I am not willing to take that chance. It is for this reason that I started installing Daz in different locations because I do not want to get burned by a crappy update.

No worries.  I always update.  I like to keep up.  I know Filament will take more work to make it easier to use.  I'm in no hurry since most of my time is spent in Poser these days!  I just wanted to get the update done!

Sometimes updates break certain plugins, which need to be updated as well. But if that plugin never gets an update, well thats it. Like GenX, whose creator sadly passed away, if Daz ever breaks that plugin, it will be gone forever.

Also, when Daz moved to 4.9, that messed up some characters. 4.8 had a glitch with sss, but the problem was that some PAs designed characters around this glitch, as we didn't know it was a gltich at the time. The result was that some characters look lifeless in 4.9 (and beyond) compared to 4.8 as their skin lost its color (they literally turned gray). That really sucked for anybody who was making a series based on 4.8's Iray, and updated to 4.9 in the middle of that process.

It's the same with Poser 11 vs Poser 12.  Python 3 is now in place in Poser 12 so it's advised to keep Poser 11 installed until as many python scripts can be updated or reinvented for Python 3/Poser 12.  ALLOT of older scripts no longer work in DS, I let those go because all of the time the functionality is either built into DS or another scripter has come along and updated or did it better and easier.  It's the nature of the beast!

  • Have you tried daz Central? That asks which drive to use, and then creates a single uber-folder named Daz 3D on that drive that is used for everything - that would have updated the DIM paths too.

That's why I always do a manual download and installation to choose the path

EXE is in the Product Library
