Iray forever loading problem in 4.14

Trying out 4.14 here.  I encountered two strange things I thought I would bring up here.

1.  With the viewport set to iray, it gets stuck in some kind of infinite loop where the scene never ends up displaying anything. "preparing the scene" in the bottom left forever.

2. trying to do a finished iray render results in an empty render as if there is no geometry in the scene.  All settings i've tried result in an imidiate black screen.  Even setting the dome to show up in the render leads to the same situation - infinite loading in the viewport or a blacks screen in a final render.

 

I notice that a few things are different in the render settings, so maybe I have overlooked something.  Not sure what though. 

I've made sure to set everything to default.
