Iray vs Octane feature comparisons?

Just got today's DAZ mailer talking about the Octane Resource Kit and it's come as a complete surprise to me, I've never heard of Octane for DAZ before.
From skimming some articles, the big selling point seems to be that Octane is way faster than Iray which sounds great, but objectively speaking, at what cost?
What can Iray do that Octane can't and vice versa? Obviously, if I can maintaing my quality and keep using my assets, get comparable results and cut my render times drastically, it's a no-brainer, but life usually isn't that easy. To put it another way, what's the catch?

The first thing to consider is the free license :

There's some discussion, running on to the beginning of this year, here https://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/240896/octane-vs-iray/p1 and here https://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/402871/iray-vs-free-octane-plug-in-for-daz3d-review-tutorial/p1
For me the catch was that any render time I saved was taking up adjusting the materials. Of course, that was before this kit. Maybe this will change things.
it has been around for years and years but until the free tier was announced could not be linked on this forum as third party commercial software
If you are skilled on iRay you don't need Octane, but you will do anyways...if iRay parameters scares you...embrace yourselves when see Octane settings.
this is Octane in the past threads (April 26,2019) that Richard mentioned, still looks like a Zbrush render engine?
I'm infering that this will be Windows only? Octane is available for MacOS but they do not list an available plugin.
Someone please correct me if I'm wrong,
What confused me at first was that both Octane and Iray are unbiased render engines so I didn't understand how one could be so much faster than the other without compromises somewhere else.
But apparently, Octane has some kind of active AI enhancement that allows it to be significantly optimized and that's why it can get so much faster while being comparable in quality?
Octane has a way of dealing with textures more efficiently which may affect the better speed as a result, it uses out of core memory for storage resulting in more efficient GPU rendering that way, whereas Iray uses GPU most of the time, unless the memory is filled and then it switches to CPU, to the best of my understanding. AI denoiser in Octane in my humble opinion is the best I have seen so far personally, it works as a post processing pass and saves separately from the beauty render/image which I find particularly handy.
At the end of the day I like to say it's always the matter of preference which look you prefer and in which engine you feel more comfortable in as an artist. Outside Daz community tho, Octane is definetly more popular and known about than Iray, it's been used in a bunch of big commercial projects (like Westworld intro for an example) which helped grow their user base significantly.
