How do I import (load) an .obj in Daz Studio 4.6.3.52

Hi there,

I have today for the 1st time completed a short-sleeved vest in Hexagon. This was done from Ghastly's resource kit for Genesis. I have exported it from Hexagon as .obj (wavefront) to My Documents. I have 2 files now: ghastly vest try 1e.mtl and ghastly vest try1e.obj

I have copied it to My Libraries but can't find it. To which folder can I copy these 2 files for DS to show it correctly under Content Library? Since this was a resource kit for Genesis I want to try and see if it will fit Genesis 1 properly. This is only an .obj without any textures, just plain and simple vest. Any help is appreciated! :-)

Laura

I may be wrong but I do not think any of the content libraries get automatically used when Importing a .obj. Just use the File> Import ... menu and navigate to where you have the .obj and select it. If the .mtl is in the same location it should be picked up automatically.

Wavefront Object files can be seen in the Content Library tab if they are in a folder (and its sub-folders) that is mapped in DS's Content Directory Manager under Other Formats.

A discussion about bringing in obj files was done here:-
    http://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/44924/
but that just creates a static type prop.

I take it however that you are planning to convert the obj clothing to a cr2/DAZ equivalent type file ?

To be honest, I have NEVER done any clothing modeling ever before, this is my very first try. The conversion you mention, what do one needs for that? I have no clue. Is it covered in the forum you mention? Up to now I have only used ready made models to use in my personal renders, but that is it! But I really wanted to try my own things and the resource/starter kit is very helpful. In fact, this was also my 1st ever modeling in Hexagon too and with the great help of Patience55 I got this far ... at last! ;-) But I have many learning still ahead to create my own stuff! LOL

EDIT: I got it!! Just remembered now I saw yesterday a "send to DS" option in Hexagon - and there it's appearing automatically - indeed under "Other Import formats". Now just have to go and try fitting it on Genesis, whether it will conform since it's still only an .obj! :-)

EDIT AGAIN: Definitely needs to be in Daz related format! :smirk:

Still trying with the same .obj format file. The only thing about this is unfortunately it can't be used this way with Genesis (fitted onto) and thus when one pose Genesis the vest stays behind (can't be posed). I kind of get it to fit manually onto Genesis as you will see in the attached images but this is it! :blank: The vest front opening line looks also strange!! :smirk: Is it because of the .obj format? The original Hexagon file have a more straight opening line (see my 1st comment above for image). But remember, this is my first ever clothing model!! I have to learn a lot and really needs advice.

    Hello launok

Your work is looking good, much better than what I have done in the past.
( I was experimenting to see what I was interested in doing with what can be done in DAZ, looking long term
at character morphs, buildings, vehicles, & scenes, hoping to get fully into it next year sometime )

Have you checked out Sickelyields Rigging & Morphing package ?
Sickle Rigging and Morphing System by Sickleyield (sold at DAZ)
    http://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/15492/

There is also a thread which is more about Blender, but might give you a few hints:-

Keep going, your work is looking good and you obviously have a talent in this area, remember that we all go through
that dreaded learning curve, some do it easily while others take a while.

    Regards, Bunyip

Thank you for your input and inspiring words, this means a lot for a beginner as myself! :-) Patience55 has given more advice over at the Hexagon forums which I will go and check out regarding how to get Genesis into Hexagon, etc. See, I didn't think this far! Many to learn!
