Video Card for Daz Studio IRAY -- $300ish

Sorry if this question is in the wrong forum I didnt' see a forum for hardware topics. I've been learning DAZ Studio without a video card and my entire system locks up completely when previewing with IRAY. With Black Friday coming up it seems like a good time to invest in a video card. I'm looking at spending around $300 but can go a little more if needed. I don't need top of the line but the best bang for the buck around that price range.

I also edit videos with Vegas Pro and I'd like a video card for dual monitors, but I can use my onboard video for a second monitor if this would make the card too expensive. My CPU is an Intel i7 8700. Can anyone recommend a video card? Anyone know of good Black Friday deals? Thank you all!

Reading your post, I would say you need minimum RTX3070, RTX2070 super or RTX2060 super - These would be the cheapest ones on the market, the best being of course the RTX3070, but of course that is also the most expensive of the three.

  • The Nvidia RTX 3000 series is where you want to go, the price/performance is excellent with this generation.

What do you want to do?  VRAM can get sucked up pretty fast, there's also some products to work around that (Scene Optimizer for one, I have and it's excellent).  A scene in the store and some Gen 7+ figures can get you there or near it pretty quick.  A simple floor and backdrop and a single figure will use much less.

I'd get at least an 8GB card, the 3060 Ti might be in the price you've budgeted.  RTX 3070 is $500 but a very good performing card.  Bad news is you'll probably have to wait a little bit as they are being sold just as fast as they're hitting the shelves.

Thank you for those recommendations. From what I could find the 3000 series is a bit out of my price range. The RTX2060 (not super) is the cheapest I found and even this is pushing it. Is this going to be ok?

I'm playing around with DAZ atm experimenting with freebies but it's very hard on my system with no video card at all. I don't know how far I'll go with this but having a video card might make it less frustrating.lol As long as I can minus DAZ and do other things while it's previewing or rendering then I'm good. My main use is video editing but I want a card that will play well with DAZ also.

my 1660ti is under $300. it's capable but lacks the RXT chipset. it can still do ray-tracing if the software is written to do it for non RTX cards which is anything before the 20xx and 30xx.

it's not the greatest card but it doesn't break the bank and I've thrown some heavy things at it. Up around 4K you will see the limits of this card though.

Depends on what you're working with, you can get away with a 6GB card, but I would advise to avoid it. If you're planning on rendering scenes with a couple of clothed figures with hair, 6GB ain't gonna cut it. 8GB is the BARE minimum for working with multi-actor scenes.

My advice - save up another $100 (just don't go to starbucks or don't get a pizza for 2-3 weeks) and wait for the RTX 3060Ti - it's supposed to have 8GB and it will crush any 20XX series card in this price range.

I concur.  Patience and saving more will pay off, to some limit of course.

I'd go for the best 3000 series you can afford.

An nVidia GeForce GTX 1650 4GB might be worth a look-see. It isn't too pricey and should get you started.

Thank you all. I had hoped to get a good Black Friday deal to pay less for a better card but I wasn't able to find anything. Plus many of the cards I found were out of stock. Now there is no immediate rush to purcahse so I will wait. The 3060TI sounds really nice and I hope I'll be able to get one when they are available without waiting too long.
