@maikdecker: Germany's not celebrating Braunschweiger Day (Nov. 27) this year? That's disappointing to hear. Damn Covid.
Edit: It's Braunschweiger Day here in the US, but for you guys, it's called "Braunschweiger Mettwurst Tag". Sorry for any confusion.
...ouch that would tie Portland OR's all time record high (107°F). Here it's 44°F and downright chilly.
I can't seem to pay by any method today. I tried to buy my son a game on GOG and it took four times before it went through. I have an order here that has a g.c. in it, so I tried Paypal, then Amazon Pay, then a credit card, and none are working. Have no clue why.
Wendy, I know what you mean. Phoenix was on fire this summer - 53 days over 110, the old record was like 33 or 36 days over 110. Just don't think Phoenix will be a viable, habitable place in thirty years at this rate.
I bought a new Kindle, the expensive one, on a black friday deal, and lovin it
Not bought any Gift Cards from Daz this year, and won't be, which is Daz's fault. The is the first time for a lot of years.
...people keep saying I should move there (Phoenix) for my sinus and arthritis issues, but egad, almost two months of 110°+ weather. Just a couple days at or above 100° here in Portland is unbearable. The worst number of such days we had was something like 6 or 7 back in 2009 where two days in a row it reached 106° (and that was at the airport along the Columbia River, not in the middle of the city). Was working in a wareehouse back then and it as like being in a giant "Easy Bake Oven".
Also, as I understand, if you don't drive, it's Phoenix is pretty difficult to get around in.
Paid literally $3 for Blue HD. Now I only wish I could setup renders as good as the promo. Btw had severe problems with PayPal today. Verification codes were taking TWO HOURS to arrive, by which time my account was locked for too many attempts.
Renderosity and Daz have both been getting lots of my money. I will say Renderosity has been getting a lot more of my money lately, mainly due to a wave of pretty good content lately. They've definitely stepped up their game with the exclusives. I still spend more here at Daz though, if for no other reason than the myriad of deals and larger catalog.
I've also been considering getting a snazzy Wacom tablet for zbrush use, but so far I've controlled my impulses there... so far...
Maybe it will get hot enough that spraypaint just bursts into flames....
nah he isn't spraypainting as too hot, will start up again when it's lovely outside
Fun fact: I was born in Braunschweig (Germany) in 1960 and lived - mostly - there since 15 years ago until I moved in to the region around Würzburg and I never ever have heard about a "Braunschweiger Mettwurst Tag" / "Braunschweiger Day" (shouldn't that be "Brunswicker Day" anyway?)
Fun fact too: the "Braunschweiger Wurst" made in the US is different from the "real" version made in Braunschweig, as it's - as I read - a kind of liver sausage spread, while it's made from normal ground meat in Braunschweig
mmmmm liverwust, only offal I will eat is liver be it paté spreads whatever but not foi de gras as that's cruel.
DAZ got me two days in a row
the Crone's house yesterday the food shaders today
I can see a Hansel and Gretal render happening

Mmmm... liver!
Liver & onions.
And especially Rumake. ( i.e. chicken liver wrapped in bacon around a water chesnut) Fried or baked. Swoon.
https://www.butter-n-thyme.com/rumaki-holiday-appetizer-recipe/ )
There's a local place here that make a HUGE plate of liver & onions. OMG I order for take-out and can make four meals of it. I do it about twice a year and it satiates my hankering for liver for six months. Mmmm... liver!
My mother used to make rumake occasionally. But my other-half was more enthusiastic about it and used to make big batches of Rumake for parties and for personal snacking.
I got so fat, and my arteries screamed "enough, enough".
Haven't had rumake since he died in '94.
So far aside from shopping for my parents and brother, I've bought the $149 Black Friday laptop at Walmart (to serve as a dedicated Amiga 1200), and am upgrading it next month (because I found out it can also run video/FX software). Here, I picked up the Niko Cyber Funk Bundle day one and will be getting the Drutherson Gears bundle + the evergreen suit when I get paid..Other than that I've mostly been on eBay buying stickers for the laptop (probably to scan and use as a desktop background), and the manuals for a bunch of Amiga creativity software.
Amiga! I loved my Amiga systems back when I was living in Florida. I had a couple of Amiga 500s and a 2000 with the NewTek VIdeoToaster. Such powerful systems for their time. Had a bunch of 2D and 3D software on them. And some music software. The VideoToaster and Lightwave 3D were awesome. I had the 2000 until a few years ago after it had been stored in the attic for 15 or so years. It went to recycle heaven.

I love both Renderosity and Daz, and most of my content came/comes from the Daz Store. But, I've been building my wishlist on R/osity (and CGBytes) for quite a few years now, and I felt that it was time to start working on trying to clear them. Although I wouldn't be doing it, if the Daz store was working as it should.
I've been looking into a Wacom tablet too, mostly for sculpting in Blender. That isn't going to happen anytime soon though, as I'd like to try and get a new computer for rendering first.
...the major downside of that notebook is Windows 10S which requires you to add software sold only in the Windows store and having to use the Edge Browser. 4GB is pretty minimal (the 2 core/4 thread Comet Lake Pentium Gold 6405U can actually support up to 64 GB).In looking at its specs at another store, I discovered this particular IdeaPad 3 model has its RAM is soldered, in hence the 4 GB maximum, so no upgrading. The last 149$ one at Walmart just sold in the time it took me to look into this mre and now it shows a 309.89$ price. Definitely wouldn't pay that much for such a limited system.
I've bought here and at rendo. Also lots on amazon. Covid-19 is pretty active here, so going to the store once a week, and buy everything else online. I'm pretty sure the ups driver will put a hit out on me pretty soon if he has to deliver another package to my doorstep.
I was still debating how to spend my self-birthday budget until last night. Birthday was a week ago but I finally grabbed one of those 1TB SATA Samsung 860 EVO SSD's that have finally come back onto the market at just 2/3 their original price.
Everybody (i.e. Amazon, NewEgg, BestBuy, Wall-Mart, etc.) are selling them for $99 instead of about $150. I don't really need one right now, but I do have an empty 2 1/2" mounting spot for it in one of my machines. And it would be nice to have one sitting on a shelf "just in case". But with my luck, the price will probably continue down to $69 soon because Samsung is now promoting their new tech QVO versions. On the otherhand, the Samsung EVO SSDs are good quality (I've got two already) but now being old tech, they might not be available after this lot sells out. I'm still leary of QVO technology, seems like cramming 4 bits into essentially a 1 bit cell is poking at quantum iffyness a little too cavalierly.
The 3-bit EVOs are mysterious enough.
Regardless, I scratched an itch and spent my B'day money. Yay!
Regarding UPS and postal delivery people. Yeah, I've been hitting them pretty hard for the last couple months. But I now have most of the big boxes purchased and delivered before the snows of winter make their job that much harder.
This.
Too many creepy crawlies in those holes here. Nasty ones that sting and bite and can do serious harm. I was stung on my foot right in my kitchen by a bark scorpion last year and my lower leg was numb for a month. To answer the other question, yes, Phoenix is difficult to get around. They need more freeways; the ones we have are stacked up from 3pm to 7pm or later every night; the mornings are just as bad. There is a bus system, but it doesn't cover the entire metro area. They need to greatly expand the Lightrail, but that's probably not going to happen for a while. If you're just driving around, though, it's not bad. It's flat here, so a lot of the streets are like grids. But with so many hot days in a row now, and the nights not getting below 90 degrees, it is quite challenging to summer here. I won't be doing it again.
...living in Portland for over thirty years has spoiled me (and saved me lots of money on getting around) as we have one of the top transit systems in the country (and they are continually improving it). Meanwhile, my old hometown of Milwaukee is doing the opposite cutting routes, schedules, and frequency. Sad, because they used to have a really good system there as well, even before it went public 35 years ago.
One of the larger cities I lived in that had really poor transit was Kansas City where I stayed with an aunt & uncle for a few months after my mum passed on many years ago. Like Phoenix and Dallas it is tiotal urban sprawl so a car was a necessity for just about anything.
I love foie gras, but yeh, the treatment of the geese (or ducks) is horrible.
I've stopped eating squid and octupi after finding out how inteligent they are; I find myself eating much less meat, but can't totally quit as it tastes so damn good!
So probably be getting something meaty for over the holidays.
The Washington, DC metropolitan area is quite large but is almost adequately covered by the Metro(subway) system. Clean modern efficient transporatation. The Metro gets you to within walkable (if you are in good walking condition) distance of most important and necessary places within the 10 mile square of DC itself, and certainly the downtown area is covered well. The branches outside the district into Virginia and Maryland go quite a way out but you still need a car to drive to the terminals unless you are one of the lucky people to live near them. I moved out before a branch was added to take people the additional 12 miles from Falls Church station, out to Dulles Airport west of the city. But if I had stayed I would have been one of those lucky people when they added the station at Reston, VA I could have walked a half mile to the station and either gone West to the airport or East to switch trains at the Falls Church station into the city. Unfortunately, if driving a car then the parking garages at the remote stations are huge but not huge enough and you have to plan to get there when there might be a spot open. Proper city buses are available but I never rode them in the 17 years I was there so I have no comments about their suitability.
...I've ridden the Metro in DC, and agree it's excellent system. Don't know why they decided to go for a street level tram (been having all sorts of trouble with it) instead of just a new bus or BRT route which would have cost a lot less and have few if any "teething pains". I expect there to be a number of "incidents" between motorists and street tram before people finally get accustomed to its presence. Crikey here in Portland we've had several LRT lines for over 20 years (the first one's been around for over 30) and I still receive numerous alert emails each day about vehicles blocking the tracks or involved in a collision with an train.
Then again there is Moscow Russia where they've had trams for decades and other vehicles still get pranged by them regularly (including trucks). Of course the average citizen there only had the "privilege" of driving (which beforehand was primarily reserved for government workers, party elites, trucking, and transit) for about 30 years compared to over a century here and most other countries.
Here In Portland they had to go with surface street system partly because of the cost and disruption building a subway entailed, along with the fact a much of the city is built on clay and it tends to rain here a lot (mudslides in the west hills are not unusual during heavy winter rains).
The best thing about the Metro system is, you don't have to tip anybody!
(said as a now experienced user of Uber)
Holiday cash?... Is someone giving out holiday cash?... Sweeeeet... sign me up for some, we'll discuss redistribution later.
Me too; I plan to donate something between $500 and $1,000 to my local food bank this year, plus about $300-$400 in food donations that I'll buy at Sam's Club (a large warehouse chain here in the US) and personally deliver to my food bank's distribution center, along with a check for the above amount.
I'm never eligible for stimulus checks, but whenever there is one, I have to expect my taxes to go up afterward.
That may sound like a loaded statement, but it has a direct bearing on my ability to donate and give. First off, I believe that all debt is bad debt, so whenever we have stimulus without corresponding cuts in spending elsewhere, I have to do my financial planning with the assumption that my taxes will one day go up (a lot) in order to support all of the current and future stimulus programs. Tax increases are my biggest fear for having a retirement where I'm not dependent on aid checks in any way. It's my biggest dream to live a nice retirement with zero dependency on any government payments or charities of any kind. I want to be able to GIVE to charity even when I'm in retirement! Because of that, I probably spend an undue amount of time researching this and building a defensive plan for myself.
I also checked my balances just a few weeks ago and I now know that when I retire, US Social Security payments alone would not be enough to keep me above of the poverty level, and that's assuming that I even receive those payments. Living in the poverty level would be in direct conflict with my comfort and giving dreams noted above, so I am toiling hard in my remaining working years to prevent that from happening.
As a result, everything has to be budgeted and my charitable spending this year will be less than half of what I want to give. And of course, other than my charitable giving, I have to tighten my belt even more. The lockdowns and layoffs around the country are not helping me feel at liberty to give more or to spend so-called "disposable" income on DAZ purchases or major hardware upgrades, holidays or not.
Throughout this time, I am still saving to upgrade my several-year-old iPhone, Apple watch, and iPad devices, as well as for my first MacBook Pro; the latter because I want to learn how to code iOS apps and see if I might be able to build myself another income stream.
Working in my favor is that I have zero debt, and if I have any control over it (and I do), and I won't go into debt for "things", and CERTAINLY NOT for charitable giving, either.
I hope you all had a nice Thanksgiving! Due to the lockdowns, I was not able to travel this year to visit with family or friends. But I am thankful for family, friends, and the fact that I am working full time and more. These are good fortunes for me nonetheless, and I am also excited at the prospects for new vaccines coming out very soon. So there's a lot to be positive about, at least in the moment.
...same with TriMet. here in Portland. A few routes even run 24 hrs a day With distancing still important here along with many people working/.studying from home, buses and LRT trains are not jam packed which is kind of nice. They restored most of the original frequency as well.
More new buses are on the way as well (soon to have one of the "youngest" fleets in the nation) including the first group of all electric ones which are battery powered rather than needing overhead catenary. The next LRT line to the southwest Metro area is also in the final planning stages and work on the first Bus Rapid Transit line is underway. Yeah just one more good reason to just sit tight here even given the moist climate and ridiculous rents (plus I can get CBD cannabis for my arthritis without a card or prescription, and of course, it's the "cradle of craft brewing").
Spent three quarters of my giftcard on Friday and was prepared to buy another but in the end it just wasn't required...(for me) most of the new releases have been uninspiring and the discounts much the same.
