Modify purchased environments? How?

Hello,

I've purchased more than a few environments and characters from the Daz shop. And most have been fine out of the box.

But.

For my project, I want to modify an environment. I bought city lot that has a house and a garage. They themselves are fine. But I want to add a pool, and a spacious deck, and a couple other things. So, essentially, I want to make the lot bigger. The lot has a fence border, with hedges and trees, etcetera. Instead of 2 or 3 trees, I may want several. Instead one hedge, maybe 3 or 4, and so on. I want to use what's already there, add some new things, and multiply others, and modify some more.

I've been researching, and haven't found anything yet. So I thought I'd try here.

I'm guessing I have to export the lot into some other software and go from there.

Any help would be appreciated. Pointers to videos or other threads most welcome.

Thank-you in advance.

You load another hedge or a tree into the scene and place them wherever you want.

  • Which product are you talking about? The answer to your question will likely depend a great deal on the answer to this, since some of them are flexible enough to let you make some of the changes you mentioned from just the Parameters menu. Also, when loading the scene, many products frequently allow you to load the objects from the scene individually; so I suggest you also look through all individual items that the product avails you of (e.g. from the Smart Content/Products menu), if you haven't already.

  • For the hedges, try instances, bit faster than loading a whole new one, and are a bit easier on the system when working, but will use around the same amount of ram when rendering.

For the 'yard', in general it's just a texture on a flat plane. you can add plane primitive(s) and apply the same shader settings(surfaces tab) to them. For the original plane, just select the shader and cut the opacity to 0. You can use the "surface selection tool"(alt+Shift+M) to select it faster.

If you want to get creative, use the polygon selection tool to delete out polys in yard for the pool, if there's more than one, which may be the case.

Don't worry about the deletion affecting the original setup, this will be only in this scene or any presets you save it as, just don't save as a "modified asset" as that will change the base model.

The question is a bit unclear because most scenes are provided a collection of items that you can move or rearrange as you wish or add objects from other produfts. I rarely use any scene out of the box because you at least need to remove obstacles for the camera. If the product does not allow this then it is a crappy product.

I suppose that in your specific case the problem with modification will be how to squeeze all that extra stuff into the existing space what will require some creative thinking.

One thing which may be most problematic is adding a pool because you probably to cut a hole in the ground for it.  if the pool is rectangular you can just select and hide/delete geometry where you want to place a pool

But if the pool is round this may not work. and you will need to do more tinkering
