Windows 8.1 (not Pro) is sufficient for poser / daz animations, etc?

Hello, I'm using windows 7 ultimate 64 bit, and I'm kind of thinking of an upgrade,
But I'm thinking of buying the retail box since my internet franchise is only 5gb per month.
on the microsoft site to compare the basic 8, and 8 pro, is due only 3 functions unless ...
But I heard someone say somewhere that windows 8 basic, it's like 7 starter
My question is:
I'm fine with poser / daz animations with the eight basic?
Or only 8 pro is the solution for 3d applications, kinect sensor etc?
thank you

Any Win 8 is probably fine; just be sure to get the 64 bit.
And....box? I'm under the impression that any DVD you get is just a starter setup program and it all gets downloaded anyway. Double check this before you buy.
Well, the updates I can go partially downloading every month, as I usually just am not able to download everything in one single month.
I was wondering if there are limitations in the operating system, in addition to those three mentioned in the microsoft site.
Please correct me if I'm wrong:
Windows 7 Starter, you can not do everything the ultimate version can, right?
Oh, I see now why you're asking.
Microsoft really damaged their own brand when they came out with Windows 7 "Starter". Talk about a neutered OS.
No, as far as I know, you don't have to worry about that with Windows 8.1 "not pro".
Hmmm, That's what I wanted to know
Thank you so much.
My own two-cents'....
When I made the transition to Windows 7, it was because I bought a new computer that had it pre-installed; it was the "Home" edition. Within an hour after getting the machine unpacked, I upgraded to Windows 7 Ultimate. (I do application development, and I really needed everything.)
The upgrade to Win 8 was forced on me, when my hard drive turned in its notice; I couldn't get a copy of Windows 7 anymore; I had to go 8.1, and the bare-naked-hard-disk version, at that.
So far, I have had no problems running either the 32-bit or the 64-bit versions of DAZ Studio. (I am, however, down to a single version of Poser -- I used to have four installed -- but, other than a few Python-based add-ins, that hasn't cramped my style!)
As for Windows 8 itself, I'm finding that, once you get past that 'designed-by-Fischer-Price' user interface, it doesn't suck.
I would repeat for all here that if you don't want to see the "start screen" in Windows 8.1 and would prefer the Windows 7'esque "Start Menu", there are two excellent choices available to you:
1. Classic Shell is free and is open source. Find it on sourceforge. This is what I use.
2. Start8 is from Stardock and costs less than $10 the last time I checked.
And while I'm mentioning Stardock, I will also throw in a highly-recommended award for their "Fences" applet. It allows you to put your Windows Desktop icons into "boxes" (aka "Fences") and helps to keep things nicely organized. Fences also prevents your icons from being buldozed to the left of the screen when you change your screen resolution and/or text sizes in Windows Control Panel. I think Fences works with all supported versions of Windows.
Here's what my main desktop screen looks like. I find it to be a huge improvement over the legacy Windows desktop, and the Windows Start Screen too.

I rather liked Fences. It came pre-installed on my old HP (the one whose hard drive threatened to bite the Big One, forcing the migration to Win 8). I was reluctant, at first, being highly averse to using, and possibly coming to rely on, any pre-installed "bloat-ware", but I actually found it useful. (Since I almost never launch applications from the desktop -- I always use the Start menu -- it was more of an aesthetic thing for me, anyway.)
However, once I upgraded, I lost it. Anything that I once got for free, and grew accustomed to using, but now have to pay for....
No.
This is why I am so averse to adopting "bloat-ware". Yeah, it was only ten bucks. But hey, a sawbuck is a sawbuck, is a sawbuck....
So, I just positioned my desktop icons in specific locations. Windows remembers how you arrange your desktop. End result: I have the same visually-appealing grouping of my desktop icons; true, I don't have the border-and-background-with-title-bar that I had with my sadly-lamented erstwhile copy of Fences, but I have the same results.
And I still have the afore-mentioned sawbuck!
I get you. But it should be noted that Windows does not remember icon positions if you change your text size. I double-down-dog-dare you. Set your text to 125%, log off/on to Windows, and your icons will be bulldozed! Set your text back, and log off/on again. Still bulldozed! >:(
I know this because I have to enlarge my text every time I start up Cararra. I was told that it's because Car was written in the 1940's and is not meant for people with high resolution monitors. In one especially tense interchange, I was also told by one particular "eye-doctor" in the Car forum that I need glasses. I have my own excellent eye doctor so I don't go to the Car forum very often anymore, unless I think I need a second opinion... :coolsmirk:
Formidable, Ken OBanion and Subtropic Pixel !!!
Thank you for sharing this
Now I am confident to buy the 8.1 without fear.
Here in Brazil, the Pro version 8 hits the price of R$699.00,
the version "8.1 to R$395.00
Taking into account that I still need to upgrade the PP2012 to PP2014 Game Dev, until August 30 ...
Jorge, happy to help!
I religiously use Collection of pictures of Hillary Swank as the background on the screen, I want to see how it will behave in win8 ...
I do not want to be without her
Seriously!?
I'm not up on the current exchange rates (which, I will acknowledge, pretty much change with every heart-beat, I know), but still....
I got my copy of 8.1 for $109.00USD. The Pro version was $199.00USD. (At my local BestBuy, and those guys are notorious for selling retail; nothing more, nothing less.)
Even so, that seems like..., Whoa! Pricey!
Three factors:
One, I already wear glasses, so.... (And I usually take them off then I'm staring at the screen, because my nose is generally about four inches from the surface! Yeah, I'm what people call a 'head-down' programmer! I just take it to an insane degree!)
Second, once I set the screen resolution, I never have any compelling need to change it. (In fact, I almost never see any need to shut down my computer; I restart it every day, just to clean things up, but even so..., everything comes back exactly the way I set it.)
Three, I have Carrara (8.5), but I never use it. And why should I? I have Poser, DAZ Studio, and Blender; I'm covered! (But I have never encountered the situation you described. What version of Cararra are you using? On the -- admittedly exceedingly rare -- occasions that I have started up Cararra, it has never even attempted to resize my desktop.)
Bottom line: we are obviously operating in radically different environments. So..., what works for me, apparently does not work for you, and vice-versa.
Let us 'agree to disagree' on this one, okay?
Agree to disagree, sure; but first a few clarifications:
Car 8.5 Pro. Still has a 1940's UI. Come on DAZ, please fix this!
No, it doesn't resize on me. I have to resize or I can't read the 1940's user interface (dropdowns, buttons, scroll bars, etc). Then resize when I'm not going to use CAR for a few days/weeks.
My monitors are 3 X 24" running at 1920 X 1200. My eyes are about 26-30" from the screen. Have mixers in front of me, so can't move monitors closer (and it would be uncomfortable anyway, forcing me to turn my head more to see left and right monitors). Contact/glasses prescriptions are less than 6 months old. ;-)
I too have moved to Blender, because the entire UI is resizable. Yay!
Now that's a nice background. Does she behave well in Windows 7?
But I fear I already get distracted too easily; a pic of her would not allow me to get ANY work done!

Today, $1 is roughly R$2.27
But Brazil charges 60% tax on imported products
these 60% is charged on the product and shipping, that's right 60% of the freight as well.

Well ... I hope she will continue with me on windows 8
I'll have to wait a few days ... In the store I usually buy products, windows 8.1 this depleted stock, I emailed them now to learn the prediction of stock again.
What's worse, really hurts.
But then still has the ICMS tax, which varies from 12% to 18%, depending on each Brazilian state.
Done it then legalized this product to be marketed within the country ... And there's the seller who needs to earn his, upon selling the product.
