Real World Numbers: 2080 ti x3 vs. 3090/1080 ti

Yesterday I took delivery of an EVGA RTX 3090 XC3 Ultra. Here is my impression of it so far:

Nice card. A bit bigger than the 2080 Ti. Runs on the hot side, meaning on batch rendering it sits right around 83.  This is opposed to the 1080 Ti and the 2080 Ti which tend to run in the high 60's low 70's. This card should probably be purchased in the hybrid form or with a waterblock for cooling, especially if you are planning on running more than one (like I am, eventually).

Now, I have a Threadripper rig with 2080 ti X 3, and a Coolermaster i7  rig that up until yesterday had 1080 ti x3. I removed two of the 1080 ti's and installed the 3090 into the CM. I was curious to see the rendering times  for the same scene on both rigs. Basically, 2080 ti x 3 vs 3090/1080 ti. I assumed the times would be about the same, and they are.  Why? it boils down to the CUDA core count essentially. The TR has 13,056 cores, and the CM has 14080.  Similar numbers. And before you ask, yes, I did the same scene using ONLY the 3090 (because many of you out there buy into the fallacy that you can't mix cards of different generations and actually think that adding a card slows down the better one. Utter nonsense.), and it was slower than it was when running with the 1080 ti added by about 7 minutes.  Its not a huge difference, but when is it ever a huge difference when you go up a card?

Results on the Sickleyield Benchmark Scene:

TR - 24.95 sec

CM - 26.54 sec

So still, very close.

So, now what? Now I have plans to build an enclosure that will hold four cards and run that through the TR rig. All of the parts have been ordered, and I will update you on the progress of that one.

  • I'm interested in your 4 GPU experience when you get it set up. Mine was a nightmare. By learning for your experiences, maybe I can figure out what I should not have done :)

I'll keep you posted. I'm waiting on some parts, and then we'll see.
