Which is easier to import, FBX or OBJ?

I'm about to venture deep into the darkest interior of CGTrader so can someone answer the following question: which is easier to import into DAZ Studio and configure with Iray materials, wavefront object (.obj) or Autodesk (.fbx) files?

I'm importing a building, not anything fancy like an animation or a morph, which will hopefully make things easier.

Thanks,

Alex.

OBJ for sure. I always use this format when import from Silo, Turbosquid, Renderosity, ShareCG and many more freebies

This is the answer I was expecting but it seemed sensible to check first.

    Many thanks,

    Alex.

It's less that OBJ is easier to import than that DS often just fails entirely to import FBX.

Thanks, @gordig.  I vaguely recall someone saying this before which is why I decided to check.

    Cheers,

    Alex.

FBX is easier when the developers code the importers and exporters correctly. So try the FBX (there are many different versions) and see if it works, if not the OBJ is the bottomline format that almost every app / program developer has gotten right..

you can usually buy anything and convert to Obj in Blender.  Only popular file type you wont be able to use are .max files.

If I end up with a lot of FBX files, I use this batch converter to convert a FBX to obj: https://www.autodesk.com/developer-network/platform-technologies/fbx-converter-archives

You probably already know this, since you have 2k posts on the forums, but my pro tip on setting up Objs and other files:

    • drag and drop them into Daz - you can do many at once
    • drag and drop texture maps to the slots in Surfaces tab

Also there's lots of freebies on Sketchfab and Artstation that are actually good.

  • OBJ is only still viable in Daz or Poser universe.  FBX is by far the superior file format, with the ability to pack PBR texture maps into the file itself and support for rigging and animation.  Not to mention FBX also has support for Catmull Clark SubD surfaces and modifiers.  OBJ is on its way to becoming an obsolete file format very soon.  It really does not have proper support for modern 3d workflow, and the only benefit to OBJ is that it is so widely supported, but that too is changing.
