I purchased this item and when I load it onto a scene the scene goes all black and shows a lighted area. [Huh]?
Why does it not work like in the product page and images. Am I doing something wrong?
first image is loaded
2nd image when I load the muzzle flash
[Goodness, what] just happened?

What preview mode do you use? OpenGL preview can only display a limited number of lights, it will probably look better when rendered.
If you have Preview Lights ON (Ctrl-L toggles), the illumination will come from any real lights, unless there are none, in which case you will get some pseudo-lighting that makes everything visible. The Auto Headlamp could be set to "When no scene lights", so when you do add a light, the headlamp is turned off. In this case, a single pointlight from the muzzle flash will not do much for the whole scene. The 3DL preview modes don't have any other lights by default, and the Multiplane Cyclorama background has some ambient light (not a real light) set by default so that it is not completely dark. It can be confusing with so many options for lighting, and the different render engines don't all recognize the same lighting effects the same way.
It looks like that product incorporates some lighting - a point light by the looks of it.
When Daz is working in "Preview Lights" mode, which by default it is, it tries to show you what your finished lighting will look like when there are any lights in the scene. Unfortunately it ignores the effect of any HDRI lighting or emissive surfaces, both of which tend to play a big part in modern scenes - so the actual effect of preview lights is to turn everything black as soon as you add a light.
As noted, you can turn it off by pressing Ctrl-L, or from the window menu.
