Question about Radeon cards and Daz Studio

Hi there.  i don't know where else to post this question, so I figure I'll try here.  I have been trying to update my computer for the longest time (as in new build).  I buy the chips the motherboard, everything but an Nvidia card that Daz3d Iray has been built around. I would happily buy an RTX Nvidia card of some kind, but nobody has them and those who do are scalping them for 3 or 4 times the actual price.

That being said, how bad is Daz3d if I get a Radeon card with 8 gigs of ram?  Is it going to work, or is it going to be llike rendering from the CPU?  Is it even worth it?  Any info appreciated, thanks.

P.S. Is a GTX730 card with 4 gigs going to work with version 4.14?

It won't matter to DS, and you'll just be rendering on your CPU, which you've probably been doing up to now.

  • Most all GPU render engines use CUDA and/or Optix cores to render.  There are a few specific engines that can use AMD cards, but not many, and they aren't really as efficient.  If you go with AMD gpu, the iRay engine will simply ignore it for rendering and you'll be using only the CPU, which will be quite slow even with a monster processor.

Cycles in Blender uses AMD, and Nvidia cards; it also uses CPU, and I get 'better' perforance by far for CPU than GPU (Nvidia); I use both when rendering in Cycles.

I don't know which is faster - performance per $/£ or performance per Watt are the only two worthwhile measures imo.

I'm going to see which team offers the best performance and RAM before I next upgrade

It's not going to be like rendering from the CPU, it's going to be actually rendering from the CPU. Iray won't play with any other make of graphics card.

As to how much of a problem that might be, that depends on what you want to do and how powerful your cpu rendering rig is. Let's just say it's not the end of the world if you cpu render. I'm currently in the same boat as you - waiting for one of the new nVidia cards to go into my new PC. In the meantime, I have my old GTX 960 which drops to cpu pretty much every time. But it's still faster than my old machine and when that card arrives it'll be flying!

I wouldn't personally buy a Radeon graphics card for an iray rendering machine, it's just money wasted. If you have money to burn, just buy the best cheap nVidia card that is available to tide you over until the new ones actually appear.

  • If you buy a current Radeon card you forget about iRay and instead use DAZ Studio + the $50 Reality LUX rendering plugin. A current AMD card will also let you render Cycles in Poser (there branded as SuperFly), and also Cycles and AMD's Prorender 3 plugin in Blender.

  • Simple rules for using DS as your main app:
    Go for PC, not Mac!
Fastest possible Nvidea GPU with the biggest RAM, no Radeon!
    NO RADEON !!!
CPU, the fastest you can effort.

    RAM, RAM and more RAM.

    or don't use IRay

  • Thank you for all your informative comments.  I guess I won't go the route of the Radeon card.  I actually have an old version of Daz (because I have an old machine) and the Iray is working there with the Nvidia GTX730 with 4 gigs.  It's an older card and I've gotten some nice renders from it.  I don't use Daz as much as I use to (I work more on photoshop and illustrator these days), but I was thinking well, if I'm building a new system (I've always been on Windows), let me see what my options are.

I guess it's Nvidia or nothing.  First it was the crypto miners buying up all the video cards, and I didn't get a better card back then.  Now it's the pandemic and scalpers.  Well, someday, they'll be a new production of cards, I'll probably have to go with an RTX 3060 or something.  Thanks again everybody, I appreciate the information you shared with me.

Well, yeah. You are right. I actually forgot, that there is 3Delight in DS,  blush
because I never liked it and never touched it.

  • Yes, I remember the days of 3delight.  It has a certain look and for that time, created a lot of great art. And since I was used to working in Vue d'Esprit, the lighting was similar.  That kind of look has a place in the world of illustration, when you don't want something photorealistic.

However, once you've used Iray, it's kinda hard to go back ot that when you're looking for photorealistic renders.  I've gotten some amazing renders that I've shown people who are not in the art world, and they thought it was a real person at first look.  And that's using version 4.9 and a 4 gig nvidia card.  So I guess I'll just have to hold off going up to 4.14 until I can get a good Nvidia card.

If money is an issue the main priority has to be video card memory.

at this time I would recommend used 11gb 1080 ti as the most optimal choice

speed is not that big issue if you use Ai denoiser but you need enough GPU memory to fit your scene.

alternatively, if you are very short on money CPU rendering actually also can be used with reasonable success, just use separate denoiser software later and you can render it in a reasonably short time. You need about 3-10 minutes on GPU and you will need about 20-30 minutes on cpu
