I want to set up a scene (movie set) which has a lot of elements. Setting up the whole scen once will help in maintaing continuity. I suspect the many elements in he scene will greatly add to render times. Is it possible to reduce the effect on render times by switching off thew visibility of all the parts except that need to be visible in the scene?

Yes, you can hide objects that aren't in view of the camera (and don't cast shadows or reflections in view of the camera) -- hide them using the 'eye' in the Scene pane or the 'Visible in Render' in the Parameters pane; if you set Opacity to zero in the Surface pane the item will still be calculated.

Hiding those objects in the Scene Tab is a good idea. However doing this, the items still stay in your memory. I dont know if they still cause calculations or render times. But if you really want to save some resources, remove (delete) them completely, save your scene and re-load it.
