4.12 Rendering problems since 12/23 - freezing, then black screen

I have been experiencing problems with rendering in DS 4.12 yesterday and today. When I try to render a pwToon shaded girl in 3Delight, it renders one arm no problem. But when it tried to render with the Victoria 4 Dynasty hair (which I purchased on Renderosity three years ago) parented onto a Genesis 3 Female figure, the screen freezes and then goes black, I realize the Dynasty hair for Victoria 4 does have a lot of hairs on it, unlike the Genesis 3 version. Despite the screen turning black, the mouse pointer still shows no problem. Why is there freezing then black screen occurring while trying to render? What can I do to fix this problem? I realized that yesterday, I accidentally saved a scene in the DAZ Studio 4.12 beta vwrsion after using the Lip Sync feature. I have since been unable to render the same as I did two days ago.

  • Are you still rendering in 3Delight? Or were the later renders Iray?

  • I still render in 3Delight.

And nearly well over 30 minutes ago, I rebooted my computer after a hard power-off. Normally afterwards, i had wait times of 15 minutes, 30 minutes, etc. But it is getting close to a full hour, and it is still on the Windows 10 welcome screen. I hope this is not a sign that my computer is on the way out. I hate to be without a computer until the stores reopen on Sunday.

EDIT: Windows 10 had since finished loading.

I just updated to v4.14 now, but I am going to stay away from rendering in DAZ Studio at least until tomorrow morning.  I refuse to be stuck with a nearly one hour wait on booting up in the coming days.

I wonder if it may be possible that v4.12 may be incompatible now, since v4.14 is the official update?

I read in another thread that there may be solutions to the problem.  I read something about section planes and enabling mesh capping.  Would enabling mesh capping be the solution to the problem?  Also, what path would I need to take in order to enable mesh capping?

EDIT: Enable mesh capping is only with iRay.   I am trying to figure out the problem with rendering in 3Delight and what may have caused the locking of the screen followed by a black screen.  I will mention that I had no problem rendering the figure's right arm today, but when it got to the hair, that's when the problem occurred.  I am wondering if the hairstyle may be the problem with the 4.12 version today and yesterday?

  • If you are getting this kind of behaviour I'm afraid my first thought would be hardware issues - 3Delight uses only the GPU, so GPU drivers would not be relevant.

So if hardware issues is the reason, what would be a good recommendation?  I mean, my current computer was purchaed in May 2017.

It could be possible there could have been a Windows 10 update a day or two ago, and the GPU drivers were perhaps updated, which DAZ Studio may not be compatible with.

  • I discovered that my GPU is Intel HD Graphics 630.  Would 3Delight be compatible with that?

Maybe DAZ Studio is not compatible with this GPU (possibly after the latest Windows 10 updates), and maybe it's time for me to consider a new GPU to install.

I may need to order one through Best Buy when the Christmas clearout sale occurs.

It may have been a softlock issue, and Windows informed me today that my computer is at risk of being out of date. I am presently installing the much-needed Windows 10 updates as of this post.

After installing the 4.14 version, I tried rendering with two scenes with just figures. They successfully rendered no problem. However, I tried to render the figure from the scene I had issues with, which involved cameras I had saved in the DAZ Studio beta version this past Tuesday. Same problem occurred. It may be possible that the problem might have to do with a scene subset I saved in a beta version. If I complete five renders successfully not using those particular camera subsets, it will be safe to declare, on my side, that usage of scene subsets previously saved in a Beta version is the source of the problem. By that point, I will likely delete the problematic scenes and redo the scene from scratch. We'll see what happens.

Good news... I did renders of five images of Genesis 3 figures.  No problems to report.

So it appears that, at least on my side, the problem is more with the scene I had trouble with in the last two days.  I have since deleted any scenes I suspect I have saved in a Beta version in the last two days.

But... I wonder if the problem has more to do with saving scenes in recent days?  I know full well I never did update DAZ Studio yesterday nor the day before, so I am confident that saving scenes in the last two days is not the issue.

At least it's pretty good that the 4.14 version works well, and it is compatible with Intel HD Graphics 630 - despite that it may not be listed as a requirement.

EDIT: Just saved a scene with a Genesis 3 figure in it, and reopened it to try out a render.  Happy to say there are no problems to report.  So I think, at least on my side, it was due to usage of scene subsets that were saved in a Beta version.

Apparently, I had the same problem again this afternoon, but I now realize there's a connection between certain animations saved as animations in DAZ Studio 4.12 Beta and the screen locking/black screen issues.

So at least now it is becoming more clear.

I wonder if I could need to update the GPU drivers or something?
