Question about Filter Forge 7 and Iray

...sort of related to Daz as it relates to Iray, but was wondering is it possible to convert materials created with Filter Forge7 to Iray using the base Daz Iray Uber Shader?  I know that PBR support wasn't included until Ver. 9 but unfortunately there is no upgrade path from Ver. 7 to Ver. 9 except through their Professional Edition Lifetime option which is fairly expensive.

The only option would be to submit a sales ticket (since I only purchased it last week) and purchase FF 10 (currently on introductory sale for 69$)

Kind of sad because I got FF7 for only 27$

  • Well I don't see why not. Set up an Iray Shader Preset to use as a starter ... then apply the new textures to it and resave as Shading Presets with new names.

    ....hmm concerned about the bump and displacement maps created as Rayes render engines tend to use a different scale than PBR ones and from what I've seen the Iray Uber Shader doesn't convert those.

    I'll look at it but it sounds like you need your own photo references as a basis for textures. .

     Well isn't that what you're using Forge 7 for? Take what is made and run it through this, textures should all work fine in Iray then AFAIK.

    ...Filter Forge Pro also includes an extensive library of texture bases as well.  

    Don't have a digital camera and to replace my old film camera kit to get the same high quality/resolution images is more than I could afford. (bought it over 30 years ago after winning a fairly sizeable civil suit, was fairly high end rig back then).

    While I appreciate the suggestions on alternatives, the aim of this thread was looking for feedback from FIlter Forge users.

    Yea of course it is, you use the textures created by FF in DS apply the iray uber shader and go frrom there. If you don't know how to create mats or shader presets for DS then you need to look that up. 

  • I think the first version of Filter Forge to support additional channels for rendering using the filters was version 8.0

    If supported by the filter (not all available filters have the option) you can generate normal and bump maps, also specular strength, specular exponent, matallicity, ambient occlusion and reflective occlusion.

    These channels may not be 100% PBR accurate, but some of the filters can generate them. Here is a lace example: https://www.filterforge.com/filters/14010.html

    You can output a texture from Filter Forge and then run it through Materialize to generate the secondary materials. Results will vary depending on the original texture, but it can be done.

    ...responding in reverse order.

    So Materialise also works in that manner as well.  I had the impresson it was mostly for turning photo based textures into ones for 3D software.

    Thank you 27$ and a little extra input still makes it a good deal then, particularly since a replacement display for one that died has is a priority right now (had to pull the display off the other machine so I could work in Daz but it doesn't match up as well for calibration purposes).

    I have created material presets (I do so for skins I create and textrues I alter).

    ..OK I feel like a doofus.  Didn't realise that FF9 was also available here.  Came across it tonight during the catch-up sale while looking through the PA store listing at 40% off with my Loyalty bonus brings it to 41$  So submitted a sales ticket for a refund which I would then apply to purchasing Ver 9 here for a net of just over 14$ (though not certain how quick the request will be acted on as Friday is a holiday).

    Otherwise version 10 is currently 50% off ($69) on their site.

    ..if I were not having to replace a dead monitor I would have gone for 10direct from FF.  As I was able return FF7 for a refund (receiving the credit the day of the sale) updating to FF9 only cost an additional 14$ and change.
