Question about lighting

So, I know this has probably been discussed to death here, but I have a question regarding lighting. Not so much about how to set it up, but more what is the best way to avoid having different light elements run into each other? In other words, how can I not have one light source blend right into and over another? I've been playing with lighting techniques, and I've tended to use multiple distant lights for everything. In some cases though, the light sources are getting in each others way.

Advice?

Do you have an example of how they are interfering with each other?

In the past I have tried to add additional fake lights to better illuminate certain areas of my scene, and have had trouble with washed-out areas and adjusting a bunch of these fake lights. While I'll still mess with the lighting, I decided at that point that it made sense to try only depend on lights that were where actual light sources could or would really be (the sun, lights, glowing objects, etc.) and for the most part avoid fake lights floating in the air near things whenever possible.

I'll try to get an example up hopefully later - gotta go to work now though...
