If I have two video cards, one 12GB and one 6GB, does keeping the 6GB installed help or hinder?

[If I have two video cards, one 12GB and one 6GB, does keeping the 6GB installed help or hinder?] Does merely having the second video card installed mean my scene size will be limited to 6GB? Or does it still provide GPU assistance while using the other cards memory? Also should I have the monitor plugged into the smaller card to free up power for rendering on the bigger card or does that not matter?

put the monitor on the smaller card. to keep the big one clear...

I'm still not sure how it uses the gram.. but I think as long as it fits on the bigger card it will still use the little ones cudas
I did a render that showed 11888mb on the big card usage and the small one was at 5200m usage (and some would have been monitor use)

I have a 980ti 6 and a titanx 12

this render was 47m 6s in 410 and used 11879mb on the titan and still showed usage on the 6g card
There are check boxes in the iRay configuration in DAZ Studio that let you choose what to use to render.
It helps if the scene fits on the card; you may prefer, like I do, using a dedicated card for rendering - as when it's not being used it is completely silent and cheaper to run. Despite some being unable to accept this, it works for me.
Iray treats each card separately so it can frop the 6GB card, if its memory is exceeded, without affecting the 12GB card. However, if the smaller card does run out of memory it will not help at all with the rendering.
so basically the "scene" I did was small enough to fit on both cards but the iray just used the 12g card more?
That's what has confused me all along.
If the scene fits on both then both will be used, though obviously the faster card will do more of the work.
