From the write up: "Note that your Genesis 8 products should work with Genesis 8.1 characters, with the exception of some expressions. However, you cannot apply your Genesis 8.1 content to Genesis 8 or earlier characters."  Will DAZ ever understand that forward compatibility is equally important to users as backward compatibility?

We all want product improvements, but not at the considerable time and money cost of dealing with compatibilty issues.  So, as for all those G8 characters that users bought, sorry, but they are now obsolete as far as new 8.1 content is concerned.

Yes, it's not going to be as costly as it was going from G2 to G3, but it's really depressing to think of the effort (and dollars) that will go into addressing compatibility issues.

Many may believe this will result in more content sales.  Perhaps, but it may indeed turn out to be the opposite.

In my opinion, DAZ should have completely addressed this issue out of the box, and before releasing the product.

Do the "old" G8 Genitals work with 8.1, and cross figure as told in the blurb?

That was the turn-off for me as well. As soon as I read that sentence, I knew I wasn't going to buy this. There's so much content G8 needs, and what I'm reading here is that all the new content is going to be for Genesis 8(.1), which I'll have to buy if I want to utilise it. It reads like a cheap cash grab.

  • Well, now I just flushed more money down the drain investing in a newly obsolete generation of goods. I agree that improvements are wonderful but making each new upgrade unfit for older product is cheap. Time to scale back on purchases and just use what I have.

Apparently we are now going to have to purchase the newest model upgrades. I wager backwards compatible packages flood the market very soon. The tea leaves say it is so.

I bought her and will use what I have for G8F on her as I can not afford to spend more money on this hobby. I spend so much on Genesis 8, 3, and 2 and I can not justify spending more on a new figure. It is great that we can use our * old * G8F on Victoria 8.1, but it is not good that it is not backwards compatible.

I agree. I will not participate in the new system. I've invested way more than I should have already.

    Really? Eight-point-one?

I feel like owners of the previous version of Genesis 8 should get a bigger discount on the base character. Forcing a bundle purchase to get a larger discount seems very disingenious.

Does it matter what number they give it, if you can't use content for it on an old figure? Especially when said 'old figure' has the same name, minus the decimal point.

  • It's usual for point releases to maintain compatibility and a major release otherwise :-/

    Someone jumping the gun...

    https://www.daz3d.com/genesis-8-1 ;

"Because Genesis 8.1 characters are built on the Genesis 8 framework, most of your Genesis 8 content, such as hair, clothing, morphs, and poses should work just fine on the new and enhanced characters. The enhanced capabilities of 8.1 are not backward compatible, however, so you won't be able to apply the new skins and capabilities on a Genesis 8 character."

Since the morphs work, it means the geometry is the same and therefore the clothing, hair and props are interchangeable, as far as poses are concerned, only the bones effecting expressions have been changed
So, you can't use the new G8.1 skins (as they are) on older G8 since the old G8 is missing the new UV... I that really a problem?

  • "Because Genesis 8.1 characters are built on the Genesis 8 framework, most of your Genesis 8 content..."

That "most is what worries me. Over the years, DAZ hasn't given a rat's fart about outside content creators. If something doesn't work, then it's too bad for the creators/customers.

Seeing that I just finally upgraded to Studio 4 from Studio 3, and jumped straight to Genesis 8, I'll stick to that.

Dose anyone know what outfit the new 8.1 is wearing? The black top and bottom with the straps?

Speaking as a content creator who sells products at the other place, I shared your concerns. However, so far in my testing with G8.1 Female, my products seem to be working exactly as expected, except for geometry shells. Because 8.1 includes new surfaces for Body and Head, they need to be hidden.

Trust me. The goal here is to produce more income, so the outfit will be for sale soon.

  • I mean, Genesis 8.1 seems okay to, say the least? But, I don't think it's a substantial upgrade enough to the original other than Facial Action Coding System for natural expressions, and the exclusive PBR Shader for it, and so on. I guess I'll wait for the 9th or whatever the next iteration comes out that will come with those features, so for now, I'll stick with the original genesis eight until then.

  • Since this isn't really a Daz Studio topic I have closed it - please use the Commons thread https://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/comment/6410586/#Comment_6410586

Also, please note the Genesis 8.1 Female is free - there's nothing to buy into, and your Genesis 8 Female is still there for those things that are not diectly compatible.
