What is Octane?

I've noticed lighting under the Octane tab in lighting. But what is it and what is it used for? So far I haven't had much luck with lighting as it is.

  • Octane is a quality renderer like iRay or Reality or Cycles. It's registration/paid-subscription based. I don't use subscription software, but I'm told that DAZ Studio users can access a limited 'free tier' and use it free. It's mostly used for photoreal renders, though has some emerging new non-photoreal 'toon' abilities. There's been vague talk that in the future it could also offer real-time ray-tracing, and a full-blown AnimeRender engine for cartoon animations. There is a large and active forum over at the maker's website, Otoy.

As for controllable lighting in Daz, the addon Iray Light Manager Pro may be worth considering.

  • Thanks for the info. I'll look into the Light Manager to see if it will help. I'll experiment with the Octane some as well.

In reality, Octane is an alternative rendering engine similar to Iray for those who dont have Nvidia cards there is no other reason to use it because it does not support many Daz features and requires quite a serious tweaking with materials to get acceptable reults.
