Translucent Fabric Shaders

in The Commons
This product https://www.daz3d.com/translucent-fabric-shader seems to be interesting although the improvements on the before/after promos look very subtle.
Anybody already bought/used them? And do the show significant improvements with smaller sized renders?

I am curious as well. I had silk blouses I wore in the 1990s that varied in translucency that I loved. Right now I have this wishlisted.
Why not just increase translucency in the surfaces?
I'm thinking about this s well. It's not clear from the description whether this is settings for the Uber Iray shader or a new Iray shader that applies different optical properties to the surface. If it is a new shader then it might do things that you can't do by adjusting translucency or other settings.
The differences are subtle but nice, I think they would look good in closeups.
I think their selling point is that it's not just making things more transparent, but making them look like real fabric that is kind of see-through. Apparently, changing translucency just makes the cloth a bit closer to invisible, which isn't the same. I could see some difference in the before and after pictures that were enough for me to add this to my wishlist too.
Hi,
The rendering result of this shader depends on the shape of the clothing (such as the folds) and the angle of the camera, and has nothing to do with volume, distance, and rendering size. As long as the item is not completely flat, we can see different transparency and colors on its surface.
Yes, this is a new custom shader. It has some brand new parameters, while retaining some of the Iray Uber Shader parameters.
The two red circles in the following picture clearly show the difference brought by the new shader. In the red circle on the right, we can clearly see the folds of the veil. In the red circle on the left, we can hardly see these folds. This is the lack of details that I mentioned in the product introduction.
It's an improvement, for sure. But I don't think those are "circles".
LOL @Sevrin
Yes, I see a big difference. Nice product.
You might want to add this "LOOK HERE" pic to the promos on the store page - some people could easily miss this while only looking at the general translucency of it.
Thanks for the suggestion. I have realized this issue after I submitted the product. But it seems that I could no longer edit the promos pictures.
You could try submitting a PA request to Daz (use the 'Contact Us' link and click 'Published Artist Help')
Okay, thank you very much :-)
I went ahead and bought the shaders yesterday and downloaded them late last night. I am looking forward trying them out.
Feel free to post some renders if you like. Have the product wishlisted for the moment.
Hey, @iwave
I really like the shader. The inclusion of the Fine detail normal map was a VERY pleasant surprise. You should mention that in your product description.
Now, a couple of questions.
1. Does "normal" uber translucency not work with this shader? The settings are there but they don't seem to have any effect. In the attached image is a simple plane with uber shader and translucency enabled. The spotlight is behind the plane. I can't get this effect with your shader.
2. Is there a reason why "Fiber Layer Weight" and "Base color" do not have tilling? Would this be possible to add with shader mixer/builder? I never played with this before.
Hi, I'm very glad you like this shader :-)
I did not change the original uber translucency when making this shader. So I guess it should work. But I will do some tests on this parameter, and then reply to you.
Actually, Fiber Layer Weight and Base Color have tillings. However, considering that too many different tillings will cause confusion to users, and their functions can be replaced by textures (please see Translucent Fabric Example 09). I hide them and do not recommend users to use them. You can use 'Show Hidden Properties' to see these tillings and change their values to see how they affect the rendering results.
Thank you for the reply. I managed to get it to work with the hidden settings. I had to set translucency to Scatter & Transmit. And it needs some Fiber Layer Weight to work.
Now I like it even more :)
I am confused about translucency not working properly. Thanks for your feedback, after changing the "Basic Color Effect" to "Scatter and Transmission", "Translucency" worked. I am sure that other users will get help from the experience you share
I tried it with the curtains of Woodman House: The Bedroom.
I think it's a great Shader.
These actually look like photographs lol
I created a veil by taking a plane primitive 1.5 metres square with 100 subdivisions, applying the shader, using a couple of simple image maps, and then dforcing it over the head of a suitable lady:
Also on show in my gallery.
