Is there to render a scene with variable camera focal lengths?

I was wondering if there is a built in way to make objects in the foreground or background out of focus to other objects in the scene. To make the final images more 'realistic' like in actual photography.

Yes, it is called Depth of Field, just the same as in real world photography.

The easiest way to do this, is to create a new camera from the Create menu, then select the new camera and go to the Parameters pane and select Display > Scene View > Depth of Field. I usually make the DOF pane colour red, or something easily seen.

The idea is, to get the object that you want 'in focus' between the near and far planes, everything else will be out of focus the further (or nearer) it is to the camera.

Page 71 in the User Guide describes DOF in a little detail, but basically, it is the same as real world photography, changing the aperture, focal length and camera to subject distance alters the DOF.
