selecting a keyframe to delete

Hi -

New to animation. I have the timeline in advanced mode. I see the + and - keys. But the - key is grayed out. I am trying to select poses in the timeline to delete. I cannot select them to delete.

    Are you burrowing down to the actual properties in the dope sheet (the expandable list of nodes and proerpties below the play range)?
