Subdivision Surfaces....Ugh

Ok... I'm trying to figure this out.

I had imported a mesh of a car, which I was going to use a a prop in a scene, but I noticed the rims on this car had jagged edges, and needed smoothing.

So I said to myself...this is a job for subdivision surfaces....now the rims look great, but the car looks awful...every sharp edge has been rounded out and it is just a mess....

How can I apply Sub-Ds to part of a mesh and not all of it...

This mesh came as a single object, not as multiple surfaces.

Simply put, you can't. You'd have to take the vehicle into a modeling program like Blender or 3D Studio and edit it manually. This sort of thing is most common on low polygon models, which lack the fine detail to retain its shape when smoothing modifiers are added.

You do have a couple of options. One is to experiment with the different SubDivisiuon Algorithm Settings under Mesh Smoothing in the Parameters pane. the other is to use the Geometry Edit tool to select the edges that should be sharp and turn up the edge weighting on them - select the edges, by switching the tool to edge mode (button in the Tool Settings pane, or right-click>Selection Type>Edge Selection) then right-click>Subdivision Weight>Set Subdivision Weight (0 is fully smoothed, 1 is fully sharp, intermediate values allow a degree of smoothing).
