"Character" for "character"

Noob question: what does it actually mean when a character is described as being for another character?
For example, "Lali for Kala 8", which has Kala 8 as a required product.
What happens if I buy Lali but don't have Kala 8? Will the model not work at all? Or will it work but look different? Or something else?
Also, there are other character models that are described or named as being "for" another character, but don't have that character as a requirement. E.g. "Oceane for Sahira 8", which does not have a required product, but is listed as compatible with Genesis 8.
Is this one completely stand-alone?

it should mean that the shape of the character it is for is a contributor to the shape of the final character, so if you don't have the for character the shape you get will be different.
There are "official" character shapes that are released by Daz3D. Kala 8 would be an example. Victoria8, Michael8, Ophelia8 are also examples of these offical Daz3D characters.
Independent PAs then make their own unique characters based on top of those offical characters. Lali would be an example of this.
Now it must be remembered that all these official characters are themselves, morphs built on the Genesis 8 Female or Male, which is included in the free essential packages that come with DazStudio download.
SO you can use Lali on base Genesis 8, the skin will load and whatever morphs are included in that package will alter Base Genesis 8 a bit. But if you want the exact look of Lali as seen in the promos, then the required product of Kala 8 needs to add the included morphs from that kala packeage provides as well.
Long story short, The required product makes the product look like the promos, but you can use it on base Genesis 8 with varying results.
