Convert/upgrade genesis 8 characters to 8.1?

I would like to know if it was possible to convert all my g8f to g8.1. I have so much content and it would be a shame if i can't use new 8.1 content  on my old  characters

  • Just apply the presets to Genesis 8.1 (rather than loading a new figure). In most cases that will be all that's needed, though you will get the old Geensis 8 lashes from a character preset.

Yes is doable, just save your G8F in two ways, depending how you save your file:

    • Shaping Preset, if you want only the morphs of your G8 figure and use the new PBR and textures of G8.1
    • Character Preset, if you want all the textures and morphs used from your G8 to 8.1 but this setting you will find your way tweaking your PBR settings getting right with your original 8.0 textures.

  • Could we clarify this process?

If I have a V8 figure that I want to update it to 8.1, can this be done and if so what are the steps to do it?

If I have a 8.1 figure and I want to apply morphs from V8, can this be done and what are the steps to do it?

in your 1st question tha answer is yes, just need to Saving as Shaping Preset.

the only move I would suggest to move on Victoria 8.1 should be the need for the new facial controls and test the HD add on and the all ready made Daz skin PBR Shader, now, this last option can be studied AND such knowledge applied to your original V8 figure, take in count that even applied to G8.0 won't be a magical task because some channels will be empty like Ambient Occlusion and Detail Channel, mainly because such maps are not  created and must be. thus, changing to PBR Skin shader won't do marvels for itself and can lead to frustration when not knowing what parameter move or what workflowis needed to get it right.

if your actual G8.0 figure does not need facial controls for animation and your original textures looks good already there is no need to use, change or moving to V8.1 and remain as a standalone figure.

on the second question I can't find a valid reason why you would need to do that.

Probably I will make a video about this.

A video would be most helpful.  The second question pertains to applying shapes to V 8.1  It would be nice to do but if I can apply V8,1 to V8 then it doesnt matter.  So just save a V8.1 basic character as a preset and it will apply?  Good news.

If you want to transfer the texture and use the new PBR shader, you'll also need to create a "Head" texture like this....

Why do the faces look so different? Is it because the new face rigging? Like the nose on the old version looks more upturned, and the nostrils look a bit different too.

And... it didn't work for me.  I dont have the lastest update as that sounds like an immense head ache for now... just was gonna wait til the bugs were worked out.

Anyway I saved the Victoria 8 figure as a shape and then loaded 8.1 and applied the shape and... nothing.  I will keep poking to see what I missed.

You need 4.15 if you want G8.1 to be able to use G8 morphs automatically. In earlier versions of DS G8.1 won't load G8 morphs when you load the figure, so applying a preset wouldn't work.

I noticed the face morphs were not working... Torn between returning 8.1 and upgrading.  Last time I upgraded it took me two or three months to get back to being able to work.  I still dont use their downloader because of that episode.

There is nothing evil about DIM (Central isn't evil either it is just an idiot).  When you run DIM for the first time do so in Offline mode so you set the program up to your liking.

As above, looking to use 8.0 morphs shapes from various characters, on thr 8.1 model.
Am I right that most people instead are suggesting to shape 8.1 shapes and apply to 8? For example, the 8.1 eyes are great. But I find it very odd that in 4.15 the 8.0 morphs are not available to me in "parameters", say for example when you select actor > head > people there's 2 or 3 morph options for the head from the small amount of 8.1 content I have, but I was led to believe that 8 was all compatible. So I can't load 8.1 and then the Teen Josie shape. Is this correct or is something not right in my setup? Checked with DIM and all appears up to date.

All the G8 morphs (and characters) will automatically be loaded to G8.1 Parameters tab on DS 4.15, provided of course that they can be found in the path where DS is looking for them, which is "data/DAZ 3D/Genesis 8/[Gender]/Morphs".

If you search your drive for "PBMNavel.dsf", where can it be found? - The full path/paths please.

Interesting, I seem to have 2 locations,
/Users/Shared/My DAZ 3D Library/data/DAZ 3D/Genesis 8/Female/Morphs, which is not where Daz material should be going as that's the smaller system drive,
and then the same path structure on the RAID where 99% of my material should be.
Looks like DIM is doing some weird, I'll look into it. Much obliged PerttiA, I would not have noticed this.

Strangely the content directory manager in DS doesn't list the main drive folder, only the RAID folder. But sure enough I renamed the library folder on the system drive and the G8 base meshes aren't in Daz anymore, so it's clearly loading from there. DIM lists both so it must be installing to main drive (the new things anything) but if Daz is reading from both locations (I can load 8 or 8.1, or 3 for that matter) then why doesn't it show the morphs for 8 when using 8.1? Does Daz need it all to be in one location? That's kind of dumb. It can obviously read all files in both current locations - it's just not showing that any 8 figure morphs can be loaded onto my 8.1.

Followed the instructions here to move all content from both directories into one new directory (3rd drive) and now am missing 90% of the stuff.
    https://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/57787/moving-library-to-second-hard-drive

It's a little unclear if it needs to point to the top level directory or specifically "My Library". I would have thought top level as "My Library" is not the only thing in there, there's "data" and "Presets", unless that was some error installation and left over from some years back.

Anyway now I have Gen8.1 showing up but none of the 8 or G3 characters. Hmm.

Got it working, the directory paths in the Content Directory Manager do indeed need to point to "my Library".

  • Hi there,

I've noticed that G8.1F characters have this differences compared to G8.

G8 had a "Torso" Surface which has been splitted into "Body" and "Head" (which is actually neck and back of head).

I have had some issues converting G8 to G8.1 as the maps used for those surfaces had not been "migrated" from G8 (applying Character Preset previously saved).

I solved "Body" problem by assigning the same map used for "Torso" in Base Color (and others).

However, for "Head" surface, which has also assigned same Torso map, something is wrong (it's not the same color than original character).

Anyone else hit the same problem? Any solution/workaround?

    Thanks in forward.

Daz Studio 4.15.0.2 and later should automatically convert Genesis 8 materials to 8.1's split zones, but scripts won't be converted. If you aply the same base shader (usually Iray Uber base) to the ehad surface you should be able to use the Edit>Copy>Copy Selected Surface to get the body settings, then Edit>Paste>Paste to Selected Surface to apply them to the head.

  • Hello, Is there a way to convert the opposite way? 8.1 into 8.0?

    THANKS!
